DIY Bugle Tube?

I have a few things I want to try DIY, first is a bugle/grunt tube. Anyone make their own bugle tube? I was looking at the collection of wiffle ball bats in the garage last night and saw online that some homemade grunt tubes are used for this. Is it just a matter of wrapping it in camo tape until it sounds deeper and less "tinny"? Do you drill holes into it? Baffles?

Next is some type of a capture on my arrow rest. I have a Mathews Convertible rest which was given to me but has no retainer bar above where the arrow sits.

I played around with bugle tubes out of wiffle ball bats. I still prefer to hunt with the one I bought from elknut. It sounds the best to me.

I am not brave enough to make or even tweak my own rest. But I'm not very handy with that sort of thing.

I see all the new rests have them and thought it would be a good idea when moving around with an arrow knocked. :shrug:

Lark, This discussion came up on the forum a few months ago and WW also commented that he took his containment arm off. I find then to be a nuisance. From the time of Esau, approximately 1800 BC, until very recently arrow rests have had no containment arm. It is my guess that they are just a gimmick. Esau probably used his finger as a rest, and could had used it to contain his arrow if he wanted to.

I don't have to take my containment arm off my Code Red, they just seem to break off so I leave them off and don't miss it a bit. If you really want to go old school on a home made tube, just cut a 14" piece of 3" PVC tube, drill a hole in both ends, and use some thin nylon rope for a sling and you're set. We used to take great pride in the camo jobs we created on our hand made "tubes" in the 70s/80s ..

JMHO but the containment bar is nothing but a brush catcher. If I can find the one I took off of my Rip Cord Code Red, I'd give it to ya.

As for the wiffle ball bat, I won several calling contest with one. You can wrap it with camo tape or just spray paint it if you don't like the florescent orange. But they sound pretty good. Back when I was contest calling, the bats were the big thing. They eventually put a 3 inch diameter rule of the size of tube you could use because a few guys were using 5 gallon plastic water jugs. NO FOOLING!

Speaking of grunt tubes, I have wondered if anyone has tried making a grunt tube out of anything besides plastic, since the days of copper tubing?

I made some out of plastic tubing that was extra from a swimming pool filter system, smoothed the ends out with a little sand paper, and covered with some camo fleece to quiet them when hitting brush. Easy to do.

Just to name a few, PVC pipe in various sizes, the nozzle from CO2 fire extingusiers, brass fire hose nozzles, plastic water bottles, soda pop straws, glass coal oil lamp chimneys, those plastic tubes that are on those things you blow into at the hospital to test your lung function, and yes, even the famous coiled gas pipe.

I suppose I've tried just about everything that even resembled a tube with a hole in it. I even tried the cardboard tube from the center of a roll of toilet paper once. And there are probably many others I experimented with that I have long forgot about!

Which worked best? I must admit, I am experimenting with a piece of flexible auto air ductwork left over from a Vintage Air kit for a Camaro. Seems to absorb more sound than it projects.

I use the flexible plastic washing machine drain tube. I also experimented with a uv 1.75 liter vodka bottle. I have a great supply of those you could hear the tone change the more layers of duct tape I put on. I like the drain tube as I can stash it easily between my back and the pack so it doesn't make noise banging on the brush.

I played around with the whiffle ball bat, sized it up to one I bought from elknut and tried to cut it to copy. I put a little too much tape on mine but it sounds close to the same, probably wouldn’t notice the difference if you wasn’t listening for it. Which it should since the one I made and the one I bought both have the MLB label stamped into the plastic, only difference in the 2 is one is blue on the inside and one is red (and one was a little more expensive lol).

I've experimented with a few different waffle ball bats after I noticed that the tubes you buy also have the MLB logo molded in.

My dog chewed the end of a thick plastic bat,.. cut the ends off and it sounded great,.. but the pup got ahold of it and chewed it a bit more
