Tarps

Postby JGH » 02 28, 2014 •  [Post 1]

I'm wanting to put up a large tarp in camp this year to provide a "covered porch" for the camp ... a place to sit or put gear or eat outside of the tent.

I'm looking for different "rigging" ideas.

How do you "rig" a tarp in your camp to avoid trouble with wind, etc.?

Attach it to the main structure. If that's a wall tent I'd run a rope straight out from the peak to a tree or pole. Over lap it a bit with the existing tarp and pull the ends down with cord just like the tent tarp. If it's a camper get one long enough to go over the top and tie it down from the backside. The front either tied off to trees or with poles that have guide lines or over a rope between two trees across the front. The key to wind resistance is just keeping everything pulled tight. Learn a truckers hitch or packers knot and you can use it on everything and anything when you need tight and adjustable ropes.

Depending on the hunt. my tarp will be used for extra shade over the tent.
One plan is to tie off of my pickup tailgate and the passenger door then 2 pieces of conduit with a gromit pin 7 feet tall staked off to the other end/corners
The other will be 4 poles .one at each corner. the low side will have 4 foot tall poles, the other will be the same 7foot

It wont be pretty, but it will be funtional

Any reason you can't just run a piece of rope between 2 trees for the ridge and then pull the 4 corners tight with cords to spikes or to other trees or small bushes? That's the simplest and most effective way.

EZ up? Out of a truck a commercial canopy kicks butt.
