How much arrow momentum need for elk?

Postby cchhaadd35 » 02 26, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Hello all. My current hunting arrows are 390 grain Easton bloodlines at 281 fps out of a 2013 hoyt charger at 60 pounds with 100 grain grim reaper hades fixed point heads. Is this enough to cleanly take an elk at 60 yards? closer would be better but that might be the only shot i get.

I am not a fan of 60 yard shots, but no doubt if you make a good hit, your arrow is adequate. I feel comfortable saying that you could experience a pass through if you hit no ribs. So, in a word yes your equipment is plenty for elk.

Thanks swede. I agree about 60 yards. i practice at 50 regularly but i do have a 60 pin just in case. I just wanna make sure that if i plan and prepare and spend 2 grand on this hunt that if i only get the one shot i can take an animal ethically at 60 thanks. Thanks for all the info.

I would recommend practicing and being proficient at 80 yards if you want to make a shot at 60.
