Yes, watch this clip & you will see Cow's can bugle just as a bull can. Both genders can make the same elk sounds! Very cool clip! What did she say?

A few years ago my son shot a bull out of his tree stand. I was in another stand about 60 yards away. A cow and her calf had come in with the bull. As soon as the bull was shot the cow and calf ran up the hill in one direction while the bull took off in another. The cow and calf did not go far. They went away expecting the bull to go with them. After waiting just a short time the cow bugled similar to the one in the video. She was trying to find the bull. The bull followed the cow up the hill about an hour later in a couple of guys freighter packs.

I watched a cow bugle . A group of cows and calfs had been jumped and had been running a few miles . The lead cow stopped; bugled when the herd split. She definatley wanted the herd to follow her, the other cows and calves returned to her location and followed the rest of the herd

Really a neat sight to see

Cow's do bugle. Looks like she was asking for location or advertising.

Anyone ever heard a bull hiss? How about click their teeth? I've heard both.

Looks like everyones answers were very close, close enough! (grin) The cow used the same sound a bull would when giving a direction, she was calling the group behind her to come her way. It's the same sound a bull would use directing cows his way or calling a hunter using cow sounds over to him. The message sent is the same regardless of gender.

John, yes I've heard these sounds on occasion, they are intimidation sounds elk use when warding off other elk, the teeth clicking/grinding can be heard best when two bulls prepare to go toe to toe for the right to keep or take over a cow or herd of cows. -- By the way great question!
