Any Jeremiah Johnsons Out There?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 02 24, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Just curious if anybody is heading west of the big river this Sepember looking to trap beavers and hunt griz and such by themselves? Just kidding on the beaver and griz part. Are any of you cats so bound and determined to hunt some rutting, muddy, snot nosed, red eyed bulls this fall that you're planning a solo hunt in xxxx state cause you're tired of waiting for a buddy to commit and go all in on an archery elk hunt?

I've got people going with me this year, but I've gone solo before. Sometimes it's better that way.

Good possibility for a lot of solo time again this year. Nothing excites me more than hunting elk with my bow solo.

Well, it looks like my partner (a non-resident) didn't draw this year ... so, yep ... I'll be on my own, most likely, this year. I may have another guy who will be there part of the time ... and possibly a caller part of the time.

I'm a bit split, really. I do think it's good to spend time in the hills alone ... to clear the brain out a bit ... and yet, I think it'll be much more likely to be a successful hunt with someone calling for me.

I went Solo last year & stayed 5 weeks.

Looking at Solo for this fall & going to hunt two states while I'm gone.

Will leave the last week of August & will return when I'm done. :D

I always like to hunt/travel with friends, but this winter I've convinced the wife that I need and am prepared to go solo so I don't have to wait for anybody else to "commit". Did that by starting to apply to NM 6%. Told her it was once in a lifetime tag because of the odds and I would never get it if I had to group apply.

Doing a week long archery in Colorado with my son, then headed to Montana for a week solo. Love hunting with my boy, but really enjoy going it alone also. Gives me a renewed spirit. Wife doesn't like it much though!
Haven't told where I'm going in MT has a few griz running around, she might try to snuff that one out!

good luck with the nm draw. we were going to apply for s&gs, but the odds are just terrible for non residents, plus with no point system....

A true Jeremiah Johnson here ;) 5 weeks is a long time to be out solo for sure. Which two states will you be heading to this year to hunt griz and trap beaver (and maybe, hunt elk on the side)?

Going with a group this year but hunted solo for years a week or two at a time each year. A little alone time is good for the mind. Even going into camp with a group we still do some solo day hunts.

Here is what happen to me one time in Alaska.

I got flew into western Alaska to Moose hunt with my bow.

I got droped off on a gravel bar.

The pilot said he would check on me every other day.

Two weeks later he flew in to pick me up.

I saw more griz than I did Moose :o

I packed up and moved from Minnesota to the Rockies,.. does that count.

I had my Partner hunt one day with me last September. After he got home he spent 3 days in bed. I told him he needed to drink more water.
And he "use" to be very fit , rock climber and could do 10 miles in 50 minutes He is anxious to hunt again with me next year
But otherwise I hunt alone.

Not sure yet. If it's like year's past, 3/4 of the time will be solo. It's hard to find someone that fits your hunting style and has determination when things get difficult.

Three weeks in Wyoming solo this year. Third elk hunting trip, first solo. I'm excited about it, if I want to go over the next ridge, I can just go.
