wieght VS speed, worth the trade offs?

Postby JJ Overkill » 02 09, 2014 •  [Post 1]

YEEESSSS I know another darn arrow question. if this was your setup which would you pick?

this is what my omen is running

687gr arrow- 282fps- .859 momentum, 121.19 kinetic energy 300gr field point

637gr arrow- 293fps- .828 mom, 121.30 KE 250gr FP

587gr arrow- 306fps- .796 mom 121.92 KE 200gr FP

my though is to go in the middle with a 250gr head. with a really good speed of 293 and a respectable total arrow weight of 637grs. 282fps isn't bad at all as far as speed goes and its the hardest hitting of the group, with the 306fps my thoughts are it could be a touch harder to tune a BH or keep a broad head from plaining during flight. but if the bow is properly tuned there shouldn't be any plaining issues. whats your thoughts

Besides the arrow weight the fps and the ke are not really that far apart. I think I wound pick the one that flies the best with the BH you plan to use.

If you can get the middle one to fly good that is what I would use. I shoot traditional only and shoot a 715 grain arrow on my 70# recurve. It flys great and hits pretty hard. You have a good combination there. Like I said if you can get it tuned that would be a really good arrow.

Those are some great numbers coming out of your bow.
But I like to find my arrow after I shoot an elk

I was joking with my buddy last night about that, the only thing I can think of is wait until the elk is in front of a large tree so I can spend a hour or two trying to retrieve my head after packing out an elk :(

I built this setup to get a full pass through on elk even if I take a dead on frontal shot :D

I like the middle arrow fine. I think I could get that effect with my bow if I could take two or three shots to every one of yours.

if youd like swede I could let you borrow my bow for a few weeks to build up your shoulders. I not to sure if you would like the draw cycle of this thing with 80# limbs on it. ask husky390 how his shoulders felt after shooting it just once last night

JJ, maybe you should shoot a 450 grain arrow. You'd only need one pin out to 50 yards or so.

I now see why you changed your forum handle to overkill. Some spear hunters use lighter spears than your arrows!

I'm not any sort of a bow techy guy at all, hell, I dont even tune my own (as of now) but looking at those #'s makes my brain hurt. What 250 gr head would you shoot? Do you have a post somewhere that shows how you built your arrows (with component weights)? I am shooting 70lbs w/ 125 gr BH's for ttl weight of 447.65 and only getting 79.31 KE, so I am thinking about using some trimmer string for a little more punch, but I'd be interested I seeing your arrow build.

Be careful with the 250gr head. It could be a problem with your front-of-center. (arrow balance) Which could cause accuracy problems and poorer trajectory. Might be better off with string trimmer string in the shaft. Unless you are committed to a certain broadhead, then do what you want.

JJ: I drew an 84 lb. draw weight bow once at a pro shop. The owner never thought I would get it to full draw, but I managed. I didn't let on that I was had a problem, but I never tried it again. I could not hold it level and draw it back smoothly. I am happy shooting 67 pounds. :D

swede, believe it or not I didn't like 84# and couldn't draw 90# at my DL. so im happy at 80# I could draw 90# at 27" but the extra 3" of draw way to much.

timberland, I get what your saying with the foc, I haven't made a BH purchases yet but have a stout two blade in mind, my numbers with a 250gr tip is 19.3% foc.

Mikeha, I went with a very stiff arrow, 11.9gpi, 24.8gr insert, four fletched with 5gr vanes, nock 11.6gr. my arrows are 28 1/2" carbon to carbon to stiffen the spine up.

this setup is for my 80# omen at 30"dl ibo is 366fps.

Dad shoots 52 pounds. He would always tell me "the last 10 deer he shot he left the arrow in the ground on the other side. So if you shoot more than 52 and hit them where you're supposed to, all you're doing is driving the arrow deeper in the dirt than I am."

JJ: Those numbers you posted are pretty amazing! If in fact they are correct, you should go with the faster arrow. Your arrows are plenty to extremely heavy and if you can push one that fast, more power to you. Also according to your figures, the KE didn't change one little bit between all three arrows. That's why I suggest the faster arrow.

PS: Hope you enjoy your African safari. Every elephant will fear your setup! :o

I think I have to be the first one to say it but, you might want to check your numbers. I would be curious to your bow and draw length and weight. The fastest bow I have found is around 360 fps with a 350 grain arrow. If you double the arrow weight you will lose a lot more than 50 fps. Did you shoot those arrows throw a graph or calculate it online? Personally I shoot 73 lbs @32" draw length with 426 grain arrow and it shoots right at 300fps.

Hey if you want he can pull one my 103# longbow. The arrows for that bow are 1150 gr total weight.

Stick bows are fun to shoot since they have no let off. If you are shooting 10 grains per pound on any bow and tuned correctly there are not many critters on this planet you will not get a pass thru on.

the first two sets of numbers are from OT2 the last one was through a crono heres a list of arrow weights and speeds from this bow through a crono

75#
465gr arrow 332fps
481gr arrow 328fps
80#
510gr arrow 320fps

im assuming the 350gr arrow was ibo out of a 70# bow. my d350 IBOed at 358fps. that's 8 fps faster than it was rated for. it only drew 70# it shoot a 484gr arrow at 305fps. according to carters archery's crono

whats your bows ibo? my omen IBOs at 366 and is 80#s

ok now im feeling like a weakling at 80# and my bow has training wheels on it. holy crap I couldn't imagine a 103# stick bow. I think I hear ligaments in my shoulder tearing just thinking about it.

I will finish tuning the arrows then get some pictures. This takes a bit of time since I do not shoot a lot with this bow at a time. I just ordered some new shafts to try some different arrows for tuning. this is not my normal hunting bow. My bowyer built this for me just as a fun bow.

just finished building a 612gr arrow for my omen. 200gr BH and a 50gr insert. arrows are cut to 28 1/2". four fletched with vane tech 2" hp vanes. I need to run an arrow through a chrono to see what the speed is. im hoping to hit 380-300+ fps. I shot at a 3/4" piece of wood with a 125gr broad head today and it split it like a splitting maul. its not my 200 heads but Im impressed to say the least. a buddy on here just kept saying that my bow is ridiculous.

Why bother with a chrono? It's a good thing you didn't double up the broadhead targets, otherwise that arrow would still be buried in it. You forgot to mention that you shot 2 pieces of wood.

mixed thoughts from a test today. this was a 538gr arrow not sure on the speed. I can post the speed tomorrow, I have a chronograph coming to my house tomorrow to run all four bows through. this was a piece of 3/4" new plywood in front of my broad head target. I only got 4 3/4" of penetration after hitting the plywood. im going to run a 200gr head instead of the 125gr head I tested today. but it did make one heck of a hole on the back side. if you count the front side of the plywood its 5 1/2" of penetration.
