Colorado. Gmu521 elk

Postby Mofarmboy » 02 10, 2014 •  [Post 1]

Been researching a OTC archery unit for this coming fall. Unit 521 seems to get talked about quite a bit. Anyone have any input on the unit they'd care to share with a flat lander rookie. Not looking for honey holes...... Those are too hard earned!!!!
Thanks in advance

I don't know anything about 521. Not even sure where it is. If I was interested in hunting it for the first time, I'd start with online maps and figure out at least 3-5 areas I wanted to check out that the map says might hold elk (and whatever other features you're after). From there, I'd find access to those areas from roads, trails, etc. Then, I'd give the biologist and game wardens in that area a call (or most of them email these days) and I'd ask them specific questions about my plans. I've done it this way in a new area in colorado in the past and have gotten good info and found elk. Going back to one of those spots over labor day this year in fact.

The gurus here can (and maybe already have) teach you to find areas on maps of interest.

Thanks for advice!! What I've basically been looking at so far was trying to find areas where there was a good bit of ground between roads or trails that looks (elky).

There several areas in 521 to look at. For archery you can hunt the entire Grand Mesa. Check the Leroux Creek area or Jay Creek.

The east side is steep and nasty. The west side not as much. Both have elk. Both have hunters and outfitters, but not more than anywhere else.
