hello new here hope to go on an archery elk hunt this fall. wondering on a good pair of boots and what broad head guy prefer. heard a lot about danner pronghorn boots. thinking about slik trik heads too. thanks

A wholehearted NO to those Pronghorns and I'm betting a few others here will agree.

I don't want to start a debate of fixed blade versus mechanical but elk are tough critters Ringleboy and they live in places where they can be hard to find and track. I'm not a fan of moving parts on a broadhead. Just make sure you pick something tough that flies good for you. Lots of good broadheads on the market. Slick Trick, Magnus Snuffer or Buzzcuts would be a couple for you to consider.

wELKome Mike! I think the slick tricks would work just fine for you. But just about any good cut on contact head will work just fine for elk. I haven't ever heard anything really all that good about DANNER pronghorn's. I do have a pair of Danner elk hunter boots that I won in a calling contest once. That was several years ago and I haven't worn them yet.

Hopefully, someone else will chime in here and give you some good tips on both products.

welkome to the site, ST are good heads, as far as boots I have no clue. ive been using the the same pair for the last 3 yrs and will be using them this yr again.

there are some really good guys on here that have a wealth of knowledge. im not one of them, as far as knowledge goes .

just curious what bow are you shooting and what is it setup at?

Welcome to elk camp Mike. I don't know anything about the broad heads in question. I like Danner boots, but have no experience with Pronghorns. The reason I like Danner boots is because they fit me well. It doesn't hunt that I can drive over to their headquarters in less than a hour or just make a short detour when I go over to Portland. Danner boots seem to hold up well for me. The pair I am using is still in good shape after eight seasons of use, plus some off season wear.

Welcome aboard ringleboy, Im curious about the boots myself, that’s yet another thing I need myself. It would be wise to get them soon as to have plenty of time to break them in before crunch time come September. I’m looking at the Lowa Tibex, but ouch, they hurt my financial feelings, the Lowa renegages are about 100$ cheaper, but I’ve learned to spend a little extra the first time instead of having to upgrade later. I would really like to find a pair that are made in the USA but unfortunately thats a tall order these days.

Welcome, and great to see more new hunters on here. Best place to learn about elk hunting.

Slick Tricks are fine heads. My hunting partner uses them exclusively these days, with great success. I use Muzzy 125s with a sharpened tip, mostly because I have a lifetime supply of Muzzys from my Pro Staff days.

Danner Pronghorns used to be great boots. I loved my original pair. But since they moved the manufacturing to China, it seems like some love them and some hate them depending on the fit, which seems to be inconsistent. Best thing to do is go to a place like Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse, etc.. and try on as many different brands and styles as possible. Boot lasts and ankle fits are very inconsistent now, and sizes vary widely. I have somewhere around 15 pairs of different styles of hunting boots (I'm sure my wife knows exactly how many....), and the sizes that fit me vary between 11 - 12.5.

I'm also in the NO DANNER PRONGHORN club.

Used them for one Season quite a few years back... and swore never again!

I recently got a pair of Lowa Renegade GTX...very light, waterproofing is excellent...and no break in required. Very satisfied so far.

Never used Slik Triks...but I've heard from many they are an excellent broadhead.

I went thru a pair of Danners, not pronghorns tho. They werent a bad boot.
I got a pair of Wolverines last year, worked pretty good even as wet as it was.

Im a Slick Trick user. Love them. Fly well, built well.
The blades can be resharpened or touched up using a Lansky or Gatco sharpener

Lou (Jaquomo) hit the nail on the head. The good reputation Pronghorns has was before they went overseas. The went down the tubes after that. They now self destruct after one season. Leak after one week. The Danner Elk Hunters mentioned above WERE an awesome boot. They were made exclusively for Cabelas but discontinued last year. They make two other models now that are pretty nice. Danner boots run a bit narrow.

I like Kenetrek boots. For archery you might try the Hardscrabble Hikers. or if you're in some high country the Mountain Extreme 400. BUT... like any good boot and ESPECIALLY with Kenetreks... make sure you break them in before hunting with them. Kenetrek recommends 50 miles to break in. I say more. One they are broken in I can go forever in them with good ankle support. The steel shank takes some getting used to if you've never had one but in steep country it's like walking up stairs.

Have a partner who loves his Asolo boots and have heard lots of good about those from others. Same goes for Lowa.
