Internal reed adjustment??

Just wondering what some of you do to manipulate the shape/texture of your diaphragms to make them work best for you.

I mainly use the yellow Primos with a palate plate. I also have some of the whites, the yellows work great, the whites not so much.

Do you do any manipulation of the plate itself, such as widening or narrowing the gap?

Toby, you shouldn't have to alter the shape of a palate plate reed, they are already a narrow designed reed. Plus it's very tough to bend or tweak one as you may be finding out. If anything move the call forward a bit or where ever you feel is the best fit. Do not place it too far back as this rarely is a good thing. Do you have dentures or anything that you are having to work around?

The aluminum frames can be bent for a better fit. However, when you bend one, you will probably mess up the tension of the latex reed. You would do best to find something that fits you right and stick with it.

Elknut mentioned dentures. I got a new set of uppers late last summer. It just about ruined my calling ability. But I do great if I take them out.

I havent seen a need for it in elk calls but open reed Mylar (the opaque plastic) with waterfowl call lots of guys will tune the reeds by shaving or sanding the bottom side of the reed.
I would think there could be some benefit to sanding if your a spitter or hunting in wet conditions

I don't have dentures or anything, I was just wondering if I was missing something. I guess I just need to stick with the yellow Primos palate plates, the yellow are by far the easiest for me yo get good sounds out of.

Toby, is the yellow Primos reed a full size reed like the white ivory plate or red imperial plate or is it a sonic dome one with the 3 leaf clover loose tag shape? Too, how long have you been practicing & are you gagging at all?

Paul, the yellow one is called the Top Pin, it is a regular reed, not a dome, I can't make the domes work very well.

The Top Pin is the same size as the white Ivory Plate I don't gag with either. I can make both work, the Top Pin is just much easier.

I looked on the Primos website and the Yellow Top Pin is advertised as having a 16 degree angle and the white ivory Plate has a 30 degree angle. This is why I asked if anyone ever manipulated the angle of the plate. I guess the 16 degree angle just fits the shape of my mouth the best.

Take a look at the Primos website, interesting stuff. I didn't realize all of the angles were not the same.

Toby, I did check out the reeds at Primos. The plate itself is the difference in angle but it's the latex that is very lightly stretched that makes it easiest to use. I wouldn't worry about the angle much, use the one that works best for you. In time with lots of practice & you become proficient with mouth reeds you'll find you can use about any reed on the market & have them work just fine for you. So how long have you been using mouth reeds?

I feel comfortable making most calls with the top Pin. I have had some of the Ivory and Imperial plates that have worked well also. But, once in a while get one that doesn't work so well. I have been using reed for over ten years. Just always looking for ways to improve my calling.

I also have Reeds that may help you out. The reeds I make have cuts in them so they mold to your mouth better. Take a look at my website and them give me a shout. With the cutting edge design of our reeds we have helped many people that could not get regular reeds to fit.

When a reed fits properly it makes calling so much easier. Easier calling with a reed builds confidents and confidents equals elk on the ground !!
