I'd appreciate some feedback on a rifle carry solution we've been working on. I've been testing this extensively over the fall season and am really impressed. Most recently I've been using it to carry two slung rifles while predator hunting. Even with two rifles bushwhacking, steep hillsides, fence crossing, etc are not a problem.



The Gunhook is a 0.4 oz carbon fiber frame extension that allows you to carry a slung rifle securely over the top of the backpack frame. This system has several advantages:

- Fast access
- Rifle weight is carried by the backpack frame and transferred to the hips
- Rifle can be accessed and replaced while wearing the pack
- Security - scrambling, climbing are no problem
- Hands free for trekking poles, or climbing
- Comfortable
- Detachable from frame - use it when you need it, leave at home when you don't

As soon as I saw the words "gun hook" I said here we go again! I always see ideas I had but never did anything with show up in catalogs. It's a REALLY good idea Rockchucker.

Mine was a hook shaped piece of aluminum about an inch wide. Had 2 slots through it for a piece of Velcro strapping that went around the shoulder strap. While it did keep the sling from slipping off of my shoulder it pulled on the shoulder strap too much.

Not many people are using frame packs for day packs these days. I'd like to see you come up with something that would work with an internal frame pack. I like thinkers. Also that Tennessee accent.

I would venture to say the pack the gun hook is designed to work with does not feel like a traditional frame pack. It carries much like a minimalist pack

I have used gun hooks and they are a good asset

A couple of things when I notice when I do.

The hunter has to be accustomed to having the rifle ~6 inches higher.
When removing the rifle in haste, it has to be lifted up to a somewhat awkward position off the hook to be ready for a shot.
The hunter needs to be sure the hook [or pin in this case] gets on the sling strap correctly when putting it on, as you cant quite see it.
If that happens, you will taking off the pack to set the rifle as it should be.
Using a split sling as in the pic, could pose a real problem

Also,
The gun hook options I have used also have a lower stock strap to keep the rifle secure in place when trekking for a long time or in terrain that that is rugged. The stock will swing around and you will end up using your hand to keep it out of the way. Thus taking the use of that arm out of the equation.

Im surprised you are using a leather sling, as the neoprene ones have more shock absorbing ability

Indian Summer, on the Paradox pack the rifle rides lower and closer to you than it does on a traditional external. That's because of our tapered frame.

We have a lower stabilizer strap that locks the butt down, but I wasn't using it in the video.

That sling is a Brownells Latigo sling which I have used for years on nearly all my rifles. I love them. They're comfortable, fast to adjust, and you can use them as a true shooting sling, putting your upper arm into a loop to put pressure on the forearm, while the butt is loose. That really helps accuracy for the times you have time to get into the sling.

In the picture, it looks to me like the frame itself would provide enough retention to hold the rifle without the Gun Hook.

For the most part the frame does provide good retention, but when scrambling or leaning the rifle could slip off. The Gunhook prevents the rifle from coming off. With the added stabilizer strap it is extremely secure but still very easy to access.

I do like it. if I was using my barney's Freighter pack it would be perfect. But by the time I have that on I'm done with the gun.

Like Brad there's only one sling for me and that's a neoprene. Perfect shock absorber regardless of how you carry a gun.

I need a gun hook for use on an internal frame day pack. I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat.

Joe: Did you ever think about sewing a large button on the top of the shoulder of your hunting jacket? That will help to keep your rifle in place pretty dang well.
