No Shot

so with all the various shot placement threads I thought it might be fun to post some no shot situations. I stopped these elk with a cow call yesterday in unit 17 NM for a photo op. now if this was a hunting situation I stopped them in a bad spot. yes I got their attention but I blew this opportunity had I been hunting. there was no wait until they step out. when they left, they left in a hurry. in my opinion there is no shot on either elk here with a bow. some may see it different if hunting with a rifle or a muzzleloader. lets hear your opinions too. let's see some no shot opportunities from your perspective. the elk looking behind her may be tempting to the new Bowhunter. don't do it

The lead cow is tempting but I wouldn't do it. You may have a chance of hitting the shoulder between the tree and branch but too risky for me when they're alerted. Besides, with my luck, my damn rifle would be slung over my shoulder and I'd have just put my binoculars down.

I agree there is no bow shot here. If you draw now, the one in the lead will see you and bust out of there, taking the one in the rear with her. Wait and don't move. Maybe you will get a break, and get a shot if the lead cow does not spook.

The bull that is the 2nd to the right sure is too tempting. If I can draw and release without spooking them, and the distance is reasonable, yes.

I agree with Swede here. I think there is a reasonable shot on the second bull from the right.

Come to think of it. There is a good looking frontal angle on the second from the left.
Wouldn't that take the cake...a bedded frontal shot. The two biggest controversies I personally know of when it comes to argued archery shot opps.

(just in case someone takes me too seriously...I am kidding about taking the shot on the bull 2nd from left. There is too much neck/shoulder covering the gap in the ribcage that leads to the goodies in my opinion.)

Looks too much like Rocky Mountain National Park and that definitely means no shot.

I'd sure like to say I'd take the 2nd bull from the right, but i don't think I can (with a bow). Knowing that the elk is bedded, front leg out and shoulder relaxed, means that the scapula is dropped a little lower than normal (at least in my mind), and at least partially blocking my window to the vitals. (middle bull, you can kind of see the pronounced scapula relaxed and dropped) Too much of a "what if" chance for me to be comfortable. With a rifle or ML, I'd be all over it, but I don't hunt with a boom stick, so I'm not punching a tag in this situation.

The bull in the middle is in almost the exact position as the one I arrowed in its bed this year. So I would shoot that one since the front shoulder is extended.

I agree on shooting the middle bull, I just didn't want to be the first to say it. I read it like a steep or treestand shot hitting the top of the near lung and middle/bottom of the far lung. I'd take that shot.

I like the second one from the right. Considering I'm in bow range, I'm holding off until he stands or gives me a more open shot. It looks to me like he has his front leg drawn back and tucked under. There is just too much bone covering the vitals.

I've got this one figured out! Since John Fitzgerald is much younger than me, and, has already gotten his bull (I called in for him two days earlier), I'm gonna ask him to head back down the trail two miles, hike up and into the huge draw on the other side of those bulls, and scale the cliff behind them. Once he gets to the top of the cliff, he'll peek over and strategically throw a rock to gain the attention of the bulls. It will be then that I shoot the middle bull. Good plan huh Seriously though, too many eyes/ears out in the open. I'm pretty sure there is no shot opportunity in this scenario with a bow.

I'm not a racist, but at least now we know John is a slant eyed white guy. And at rock throwing distance he still can't even hit an elk!

and how far is that branch relative to the bull..? i'd probably take that shot..just hook the arrow over that branch given the right distances.

I'd be taking that shot...my arrows are so heavy the trajectory is kinda like lobbing a rock.

Im smoking that cow on the left with my rifle - bow no shot

The pic of the bull:
Its a hard quartering shot. The tree branches blocking the whole sight window can mess with your mind.
That type of shot you tend to shoot high, instead of shooting just above the branches
