just got my 62st in the mail today, got a deal on a brand new one for $300. ordered the washington land boundary / ownership map chip. going to be a real game changer. when the weather opens up ill be ordering the idaho map chip too. being able to scout idaho knowing i wont end up inadvertently trespassing is going to be huge. that being said, if anybody on here can give me the rundown on what to expect whitetail wise in boundary county idaho, between priest lake and bonners ferry maybe, (priest lake state forest / kaniksu ntnl forest) pm me. not looking for locations, just info about the general area and what to expect out of the deer. elevation wise, density wise, stuff like that. looking to go in the woods after the big mountain whitetails. around here everywhere i go is no higher than 5000ft, and i find whitetails all the way up. im seeing some higher elevations in the panhandle tho.

I have no information on where to deer hunt on the panhandle, but that new Garmin could be a real game changer. I never have had occasion to use the map apps to confirm were I am in reference to private land, but I have heard it made a lot of difference for others. Seems some locals wanted to run off legit hunters from some BLM land. By having a good GPS they were not intimidated and were able to keep on hunting.

The country is thick steep and nasty! Big mountain bucks do routinely come out of that county though. Boundary is one of the top record buck counties in the state in fact. My dad picked up a suspected wolf kill a few years back that went 188" typical.

I know of several bucks that past few years that are over 160". These have come out of the bottom lands.

according to boone and crockett bonner county is #1 for entries in idaho and boundary is #2, but im wondering if a lot of that isnt due to the fact that boundary county has a lot more hard to access, formidable back country, so less people really hunt it rather than there actually being less quality deer there. my intention is to get up into the kaniksu after the big wild bucks. ill bring a wolf tag too! hate to see another 188" typical get eaten. thats a pretty amazing trophy. i dont suppose you have a pic of the thing do ya?

I'm looking at the Montana 650t that comes with the 100k topo preloaded but I see the 62STC 150$ off ATM for $450 at cabelas. I can knock off a hundred with points I've accumulated on either plus 50$ off the Montana with a coupon.

Other than screen size the cabelas compare page really doesn't give the Montana a big advantage over the 62STC

So I'm looking at about 359$ for the 62STC or 450$ for the Montana 650T, any suggestions? I really hate to spent that much since I already have an el-cheapo etrex that works, but no maps or anything.

the 62stc is the same as my 62st but it takes pics too, and not only takes pics but can mark waypoints with them and do some other cool stuff. if i could have gotten the stc for 359 i would have been right on it, despite the fact that it uses batteries faster than the st. i found my 62st for 300 on amazon.
el cheapo gps is nice for finding your way home, but having one that shows every property boundary and names the owners, thats huge. it does require you to purchase the state specific chips tho, they cost $99 each.
