Removing HIT Inserts?

I received a few arrows when I purchased my bow. There are three arrows which have jacked up inserts...they weren't pressed in far enough. I tried heating a field point with a candle, tried the drill bit in the shaft and slinging it around, bench vise, channel locks...nothing!

I'd really hate to trash three arrows just because the inserts aren't seated far enough.

Any other thoughts?

You can't get them out. I've had the same issue and nothing I tried worked. I'm not a fan of the HIT technology and I never let anyone install them for me.

Ive had a few glue up to fast and I ended up drilling them back out. Just make sure you have the right size drill bit and be VERY careful....

Are there any alternatives to the HIT system? I have an uncut doz of FMJ's. I have been leery of the insert system would like something that I can "undo".

Can I stack some washers underneath and use these as a small game arrow?

No alternatives that I'm aware of. Love my FMJ but don't like the hits at all.

There are a couple alternatives. Do a search for Firenocks, he makes a half insert/half outsert that fits. I think that the insert/outsert for Goldtip Kinnetics will also work.

I have that happen as well. Glue sets real fast !!! LOL I just use them all summer for the targets. You'll lose some and wreck some anyways. I also go stump shooting with the judo tips and they are great for that !!

I hate to agree, but I will! I shot FMJ's with my old setup and loved the arrows (just not the inserts). I had arrow ends begin to flare out after shooting targets for a while. Not a fan of the arrow shaft doubling as the shoulder that seats my broadhead. Got some Injexions but had the same feeling. Love the arrows just not sold on HIT yet. A squaring tool is a must for shafts using HIT. A quick spin test has proven that over and over. Just MHO !

Thanks for the video. I watched it the night before I posted this question. I read too many conflicting reports of heating the tip THAT much. Something to do with heating up the epoxy to the point the insert breaks its bond with the shaft that the resin holding together the carbon is also damaged.

Got asample of a hot melt glue that works good for HIT inserts. Low temp melt point. Can't remember the name but its blue. If I find it iI'll post the name here

Found this idea for removing inserts doing research on the HIT/FMJ issue, not sure if the ID of the FMJ allows for a heavy enough drill, bit but the idea is sound, save for the fact of the insert and drill bit go sailing across the room or yard!

Only issue I can see is if the glue impregnates and bonds with the carbon, in which case it will tear out some carbon in the shaft ID pretty much ruining the shaft anyway?

I did try the drill bit trick but didn't really commit to it. I trashed one arrow by ramming a skinny steel rod down the shaft and hammering. It knocked the whole tip of the arrow off and shredded the carbon fiber. I figured it was already useless and if it worked I would look like a hero...if it didn't work...I wouldn't try it on the other arrows.

I have tried the drill bit trick a few different times. I have yet to knock an insert out doing that. I think it is one of those things that sounds good and gets talked about but no one ever tries. I've swung the shaft for 10 minutes and no dice.

Here is my last help suggestion 100% promise it will work!

Cut off the bad insert as required, reinsert new HIT at correct depth and only draw bow back required lenght to the arrow rest. Voilà, bonus is youll be able to walk up and down the mountains with just your arms by September.
On second thought dont try that.

What I ended up doing was have the arrows cut down to fit my son's bow. We had to literally destroy (light on fire/melt) the ends which were cut off to salvage the inserts, but at least they'll get some use. Sure, they are way too stiff but he likes the idea of shooting the same arrows I am shooting. I'm going to try to use hotmelt when I put the inserts back in.

Been there done that. How long do you think it would take you to knock that out swinging a 1/4 inch drill bit in an arrow shaft?

So I have used the drill bit method before with mixed results, I have come to find if you use a bunch of the easton epoxy it will never come out. If you use a little easton epoxy you have a chance, if you used CA glue it will come out.

Just what I have found.

I use Gorilla glue on my inserts.
