Google Earth

As most of you probably do, I use Google Earth quite a bit when referencing my Topo maps, as my aerial resource. My GE is loaded with placemarks, trails, specific hunt paths and possibilities, etc... What I am having a problem with, is I am trying to send my "markers" to my partners via email. I can send one placemark just fine, but only one at a time, not the dozens that I have made. Rory (Phantom) and myself have been shooting emails back and forth trying to figure this out, but we haven't cracked the code yet.

Does anyone know of a way to send my placemarks to a friend, so they are essentially looking at the same thing as I am? I know I can send coordinates, and they can be entered one by one, but if I can avoid doing that, it'd be great. I am not wanting to just send a snapshot of my view, but an actual working "document" of my GE, so they can see the properties (distance, elevation, views, etc...) of everything I have marked.

Yes.
Here is what you do:

Create new folder on desktop
In GE, Right click on the placemark
Select 'Save Place as'
Name it if you havent already
Be sure to save it as a KML file [not Kmz]
Save it to the folder on desktop

Once you get all the waypoints into the folder, you can attached them in an email to your buddy
Your buddy can then open them up and save them to his GE

Another way is to create a new folder in GE, drag or create your new marker(s) in the folder, click the root of the folder, than save the file as blah.

This way you can have all of your marks in a single file.

Also, you use GPSBabel http://www.gpsbabel.org/ to convert the KML/KMZ file into waypoints your GPS will understand (and vice versa). I can do a quick GPSBabel tutorial video if there is enough interest.

Transferring waypoint data from Google Earth to your GPS

Create a new folder on your desktop & name it accordingly

Select a waypoint you created in GE – right click on the waypoint and
select ‘Save Place as’ – (You can either rename it or leave it the same)

Select ‘save as type’ drop down and be sure to select ‘KML’

Save in new created folder on your desktop!

Now…

Go to www.GPSbable.com

(Plug in your GPS to your computer USB and turn it on)

Under ‘Input’ select File
Format – Google Earth (Keyhole) Markup Language – (KML)

Select ‘File Name(s) and find your folder with your GPS waypoints as KLM

Select the waypoints you want to transfer into your GPS.

Under ‘Output’
Select ‘Device’
Click Format and find your device (GPS)

Click ‘Apply’!

All done!
Your waypoint(s) from your virtual scouting are now in your GPS

No doubt about it (we'd probably have 50 emails back and forth before we finally got it down). This is all new, and very useful tool tips/information for GE and GPS transfer. I guess those Colorado guys are pretty smart Looking forward to playing around with this recent info later today.
