"Sticky"/ Archived Threads ?

I am in constant amazement at all the sage wisdom and invaluable information that gets shared on this forum. It really is THE BEST elk and hunting forum around ! I have so much gratitude for Paul, the MODS, and all the regular contributors here. Thank you !

But I'm totally overwhelmed with the amount of info that flies down the pages. I can't keep up ! It would be awesome of some of the best threads could be sticky-ed or archived. I think this would help newcomers especially but also the vets who want a refresher on a new strategy or something they want to try...

I've participated in other forums that did this and it was so popular because the FAQ's could be answered by the whole forum and you got a general consensus about how experienced guys would handle any given situation. It keeps the new threads from getting too repetitive. Every sub forum ends up with its own FAQ's section or mini-library of " good tips". What do you guys think ?

Have you looked at the "Archived Tips" forum? We have archived the best of the Elk Forum tips there. That forum could be expanded and we are discussing some additions now. I have done the most of the archiving there. I am never sure what is the best. I have my own criterion, but in order for it to be only the best, many are not selected. If you have not reviewed it, take a look and let us know what you think.

I was going to quote Swede and say ditto... but I clicked on the link and see your point. No question it would be good to group our archived thread into general categories to make ones on each topic easier to find. No doubt. Great idea Huntrgathr.

To be honest, I have no idea how John would go about indexing the archived tips to be more user friendly and to reduce redundancy. I clicked on the recommended thread, and don't see the advantage. I am not disagreeing. I just don't understand.
We have discussed deleting irrelevant posts, so people searching through a thread would only be reading relevant posts. The problem is that the number of posts people are credited with is important to many. If we delete a post your count goes down. Theoretically you could go from being an elknut to a calf. I think keeping everyone's count could be done if RJ or I went in and edited posts so only the word "edited" was left. Also through editing even extraneous parts of a post could be deleted. Is that a good idea? Would editing threads to look more like Elknut's Tips and Clips be helpful?
Another thing to remember,we truly want this forum to be the best elk hunting discussion and reference source on the WWW, but we have limited resources. No one is getting wealthy and for most of us, it is totally a volunteer service we do help you our fellow hunters.

Swede- You're right - the information is all there and available to anyone who has a good grasp of the search function. What I'm suggrsting is just wat to organize things so that the best stuff is more visible and accessible. Having some " read first" threads stickies at the top of the individual sub forums just helps get everyone on the same page. Kinda like the "Broadhead Tuning Day" thread over on AT. Everyone should read through that before they start to ask tuning questions IMHO. And yes, it does require volunteered time to organize things in such a way. I'd be first to volunteer if I even knew how. I think it would be less work however than editing out all the extraneous posts from all the threads.

I'm a little surprised to hear you guys aren't getting rich moderating this forum. I figured Paul would be paying top dollar for this quality of moderation ( grin )! I dont want to take anything away from all the hard work you guys do. Just throwing ideas out there. Keep up the good work guys !

If someone really was interested in a thread, that person could just bookmark the URL in the address pane and keep their own index of favorites - saved to a folder in their bookmarks

I think to try to organize the threads to accommodate everyone would be futile

LOL You would think. Anyway Huntrgathr, I appreciate your posts on this. Who knows where Paul and John will go with this, but I do appreciate any and all suggestions that could improve the forum. I do not know how to put a sticky on a post here. I just found out that the real stickies do not require licking before you place them on your paper. I still think I am a little ahead of cnelk. I have figured out that those holes in the plastic strap on the back of a cap are for adjusting the size. One size fits all Brad,
