Here we are again. Its a Saturday night in January and football is on.
I have a topic for the evening chatter. We can stay on topic on it can go anywhere it may lead us.

Topic:
Ground Blinds vs. Tree Stands
Which one gives the most advantage to the hunter?
This isnt necessarily geared toward elk hunting, just hunting in general.

Well being from back east until this year I have done a lot of whitetail hunting. My personal favorite is a tree Stand about
24' up. It helps keep your scent up above the deer's noses. I have hunted from pop up blind a good bit also but not with near the success .
My kids have used them a lot while rifle hunting with great success, but they where set up for 100 yard shots not 20. I just always had problems
With deer winding me in a ground blind.

I took an impromptu trip with the family to Estes Park. I saw roughly 60 elk eating dormant grass. I don't think a ground blind nor a tree stand would have allowed us to get any closer. lol

I have both, though I've only used the tree stands. I shot my bear over a bait her in Colorado, back in 1989, and also a few whitetails out east..
I recently purchased Swede's Tree Stand for Elk book, though I really didn't think I would hunt elk from a tree stand. I bought because I figured it would be brim full of lots of good info, stuff from which I would benefit whether I hunted out of a tree or not. So far I've not been disappointed. And I'm even kicking around the idea of using the tree stand at least some next fall. Or I could take my ground blind. I guess time will tell.

Oh, and I forgot-- Andrew Luck is a gamer. Unfortunately for him and the Colts, so is Tom Brady. That said, the Colts may just pull this thing out. Doubtful, but they might...

it depends upon what game you are after.....the pop up is magic with turkeys. the don't even seem to care one is sitting there. it is much easier to draw on the bird when you are in the blind versus in a tree; because they will spot you up there.
WT are wary of the popup unless they have seen it a lot and become used to it in a certain spot. and if the wind is wrong your scent is going to get you busted.
on elk I don't know - never sat in one. now tree stand hunting for elk I haven't done either,

I see the Seahawks won. Yeah. Yawn. I have the tree stands and the portable blinds for elk. The only advantage I see to the portable blinds is they are quick to set up and you can have a heater in them. Ok, you can store more food and groceries in one and take a nap, with a pillow, if you choose. I am not sure how taking a nap while hunting could be an advantage, but I tried.

I have one big advantages using a ground blind, I can put it anywhere I want,.. Unfortunately there are no trees where I hunt
I can stay out of the sun, lay down and nap, move around etc. in a ground blind lots of room 5x6x5
My buddy has a Ameristep fabric blind solid in the wind, quick and easy to set up he moves it if the wind isnt right for the location

With screens up no bugs
No need for the right tree with a ground blind Your not going to die falling out of my groundblind
I will say most big game do not completely ignore blinds, yes they walk up to them cows and calves will rub on them (well bulls too)

I see the Seahawks won. Yeah. Yawn. I have the tree stands and the portable blinds for elk. naps are my key to hunting success! this september i laid down in a shady draw for a little while ( no blind or anything just laid between logs ) and woke up to a young bear basically crawling right up my ass. 8ft shot, done deal. after 3 hours of hunting. then here in november i was more or less sleeping all day due to the cold. woke up to some noise and theres a nice 9 pt buck 100 yards from me. done deal. hunting naps are a key element to my hunting plans. they keep me from getting fidgety and impatient. its pure strategy! just doze off for a couple hours, then wake up and shoot something. cant get any better than that

So what would someone do if they are a very sound sleeper. I have been woken up by holves beating it out of there and by the time I can get the sleepers out of my eyes everything is out of sight. Another time my brother had to wake me up with a bull bugling a couple hundred yards away while I was sawing logs. Its taken years to perfect sleeping with a snoring wife, but how do you turn it off while hunting?
