Cat problems

The night before last a lion attacked and killed the neighbors horse. This was just across the river bottom from my house and I can see their property across the valley from here.

Right now they seem to think it was a female with two youngsters. At least that is what had been sighted in the area last week. If I hear more, I'll post it.

wow that's close to home and a big animal for a cat to bring down. just goes to show that cougars are a very opportunistic and powerful predator. I worry about cats more than any other predator when in the elkwoods.

Not sure exactly where you are WW but if hunting is legal and the season still open like it is in many states they should have lined u a houndsman and fast. Most guys with dogs would be there in a flash. Also.. I doubt that the entire horse was eaten in one sitting. Cats normally come back to feed off their kills. A ground blind might do the trick but there's a good chance it's nocturnal. If it shows up at night a good dog should be able to run it up a tree pretty easily. Lion: the other white meat. If that was my horse I'd be doing something!!!

I live in a semi rural area of Central Oregon surrounded by small acreage (10 acres or less) hobby farms. In fact my property boarders the city limits line. Last winter my neighbors horse was taken down by a cougar and what is believed to be her two youngsters. Made for some pretty sleepless nights this summer and fall when one of my mares dropped her baby mule. I hope you find the cat WW.

where do you live if you dont mind saying? up here in washington a lady who lives nearby had one of her alpaca killed by a lion last year, and she called wdfw. they sent in a guy with some hounds ( i believe the very next day ) and he went into the woods by her house where the attack happened, and she said it took them ten minutes and they came out with a dead cat ! now thats service!

It's sure a lot different around here. If the wildlife people in this state don't see it with their own eyes, it just doesn't happen. In this particular case, when the division of wildlife came out to investigate, they couldn't have cared less. It's the same way with wolves around here. Until someone kills one around here and places it on their front door step, they will tell you they don't exist in northwest Colorado. And even if they see it they'll probably tell you it was shot in Wyoming.

Cat did try to kill one of my horses once. Jumped on it in the pasture, and from what we cold tell the next morning, the other horses helped get it off while that mare ran around like crazy, through a barbed wire fence. Took a lot of stiches but she survived. The cat went across the road and killed a calf after that - figured it was a bit easier prey.

After having a showdown with one in heavy deadfall at 10 feet, I don't like them much.

Cats are as bad on our wildlife as wolves. To make it even worse, the brain trust in California decided to place a moratorium on them in 1999, and onto the ballot it went. It passed, now they wonder why the deer population here is in major decline. I've seen a cat kill a deer (at a distance through binos) in the Trinity Alps Wilderness area, and within one hour, the cat's kill was taken away from it by a bear. That cat had to kill again the next day. I totally agree with the three S S S . I've never had a cat encounter, before 1999, I had only seen 2 in my entire life, now I see 2 to 3 a year.
