Colorado 16 pp what to do ?

Postby bigmart » 01 04, 2014 •  [Post 1]

My brother has 16 pp this year, he has been hoping to draw area 61 but the point creep may keep him out for many years.
We have been discussing his options and I told him he would have a better chance of me scattering his ashes over 61 before
he gets drawn, We would like to ask your opinion on what area he should apply for. Would like to have the opportunity at a
300 + bull.

GMU 76
It takes less points, but he wont catch up to 61 with point creep and other factors coming in 2014.
76 is more rugged, alot of it burned last summer, but produces some good bulls.
I havent hunted 76 or been there, but there is intel available on that unit if you search online...

Would it be better to wait until 2015 for unit 76 due to the burn area, or would this year be just as good.

Good question.
But elk like new burn areas so if its something he wants to do, go for it.
To get last year info about the burn area, search 'West Fork Fire Complex' on the web.

I sent you a PM

Also,
With 47 NR tags available last year, all NRs with 11 pref points drew the tag, some with 10 pref points drew.
He would be guaranteed to draw the tag for GMU 76.

Last year, one NR used 16PP and two used 15PP. So it looks like others are wanting to dump their PP too

What season is he hunting? I would also take a look at unit 67 which is directly north of 76. I have personally hunted 67 although not in recent past. If you are interested either of these units let me know and I can give you some help, although all my hunting experience has been in 67 I know people that have hunted 76.Best of luck bigmart!

There are alot of units that have good elk hunting with less PP.
Here are the minimum NR PP for 67

Archery 2PP
Muzzleloader 10PP

As elkaddict83 asked, what season is he interested in?

same problem here bigmart.
my 12 wont get me a 1st rifle hunt in 76 because of the creep and it will not buy us anything else like 61. but there are several units like 67 we would like to hunt.
so I am following to learn some wisdom too.

Thanks for all your advice, this would be archery season and I would have 3 weeks to get it done. regarding gmu 76 I have not received my maps yet but the unit looks to be mostly wilderness area, some have said we should have someone pack us in, or is this an area we can access on our own.

Bigmart
Send 'Buglmin' a PM.
He is from that area and is well versed in GMU 76.
He would be your best resource to details
Good luck!
