Bow issue(s)

Postby Willie makit » 01 02, 2014 •  [Post 1]

What do you think could cause this? I thought somehow the rest got way off to right but looking carefully at the cams/string alinement out tothe tip of the arrow when nocked it looks dead perfect the one arrow missing fetching landed on my left hand when I shot it. If you look carefully the moleskin is also being dragged forward by the fletching on the shelf right side.

If it was too slow coming down it should be hitting both, The guy at shop says I probably shot the spine out if the arrows, is this BS? I just switched to carbon arrows with this bow last year and took 2-3 trips back to get it stacking arrows last year. I shot the heck out of it till July or so then picked it up in October, it ain't been right since.

Hoyt alphamax 32, 65 lbs. gold tip 5575 with 100 gr broadhead.

Do you have the TL1 fork on the QAD now?
That is the fork needed for faster bows.
Also,
If the QAD is not up 90 degrees at full draw, even if it is slightly less that 90, it will not drop. The fletching will hit the fork and many times force it to drop down, and serious fletch contact and very bad arrow flight will result

The rest must be at full 90 degrees at full draw or it will not drop away as it should. The fletching will force it down

99% sure it goes to 90 deg, but no idea about the rest model/type. Do you think the excess moleskin is hurting it?
I had marks on my fletching before I put on moleskin but it's obvious like it is. It just doesn't make sense to be hitting the left fork like it is and nothing on the right side.
I'll see if I can find the package when I get home this pm, I'm at work, shhhh :D

QAD rests come with 2 fork options.
It is clearly marked TL1 on one of them.
Your moleskin should be fine

Try turning your nock / fletching to a different position and see what happens

Be sure that the rest is tune exactly like described on the setup.
You can go to QAD website to review.

Do you have your timing cord tied into the cable or are you using the supplied tightener?

The timing cord is tied to the cable. He had me draw it so he could set it, then tied it down. . ( i let the shop put it on when I got it)
Now you mention that I think I recall them Tossing other,

I called dude at shop he said they usually only have to use that other rest on PSE and Bowtech bows, guess that means I got a good bow, ? Lol

I've have poor luck with rotating fletching, but will tinker some more, may go by in am to see if he got one laying around.

Check out the QAD link
Call them and they will send you the TL1 fork if needed
The link also tells what to do if you have fletching contact

Mine did that! I confirmed by putting lipstick on the edge f the vanes. Fixed it by lowering the attachment point on the cable. Instructions say 3"+. I went closer to five. I attached lower than the bottom of my grip. I used the factory skins too. But yours looks softer and quieter.

Thanks for link cnelk, can't believe its right there in black and white, I recall the ex hoyt rep that works there talking to his helper about it but wasn't paying that much attention. I never have any good luck when have other folks work on my stuff, going to dig up and learn to do it myself. In days past tinkering with stuff was fun, now it's like work.

I was going to move rest over a touch yesterday but couldn't find my modified wrench to get in behind the frame.

Thanks guys, hopefully I'll be back to tearing up arrows by tomorrow pm.

Looks like your rest is set too low. At least that is how it looks in the pictures. Look at the second picture and notice the location of the Burger hole. Your arrow should be centered on the hole when nocked and the rest is in the upright position. And all tuning should be leveled and squared off of that hole. It is the dead center place of your bow.

With the rest being set too low, it doesn't give your drop away rest enough room to work and get out of the way. Obviously you have a fletching clearance problem. And just in case I'm looking at the pictures wrong, there are two other things that may be wrong.

(1) The rest is recoiling or bouncing back up part way and catching the fletch as it passes.

(2) Try turning the nock so the fletch will clear.

But I'm betting everything is set up toooooooooo low to begin with.

Bill
I looked at what you mentioned about being too low by comparing pic 2 & 3.
When the fork is up, it looks like the arrow may be very close to the center of Berger button.
It may my a tad low, but probably not as low as it looks in pic 3

Willie
Let us know what needed to be done to get it tuned

I've had some problems with qad rests when Hoyt bows aren't synched properly. Set the top draw stop to contact a couple millimeters before the bottom and set arrow perpendicular to string at level of berger hole.

As was mentioned already, I think this rest works more consistently with a longer string attached to cable.

Overall I've not been impressed with this rest. It has been much more sensitive and problematic than some other full contain drop away rests I've set up and used. Scares me in the mtns. Seems more likely to give me fits. That being said, it seems to be one of the most popular rests on the market so I'm obviously in the minority.

Thanks, sent my young-en to local shop and got a lt1 rest, swapped it out and moved the nock point up on string and shot it tonight, put lipstick on fork, no marks.
Did have to lower my sight 1/4" due to hitting low at 20 yards.

Will take better look tomorrow in daylight and with broadheads and post results. Hoped my new string would have come in but no such luck. I'm off to the deer woods tomorrow unless I hit a snag with it in the am. Got to take advantage of the cold wx and late rut, still ain't punched a tag this year.

It was dead center of the Berger button, now it's a tad high. I guess tecnically I shoud have just replaced the rest and lowered the rest 1/8" if the shelf would have allowed the rest to lay flat out of the way. I'm just tring lo limp by the rest of my deer season, then going to really start tinkering with it.

The last time I had one of the stops hitting g before other it really wanted to takeoff on me. Like the let off was nearly gone, don't recall whichever was hitting, think it was bottom but not sure.

As per the qad setup instructions I did move the rest just a very very slight to the left to correct it hitting on one side but think the different rest is going to make all difference.

I never had any issues with my ripcord but really like the letdown feature of this one, but if I get to not trusting it I'll go back to it.

Well I got it shooting much more accurately and no contact on the rest, hunting the next couple days with lipstick on rest, lost my moleskin to make is soft, quit and fluffy. Basically just swapped the rest, removed the string nock and put it on bottom instead of top. Not the best thing but it's shooting consistent enough to get me through remainder of season. I do have room to lower the whole rest an 1/16-1/8th and clear the shelf, which I'll do when my new string comes in.

Does anyone know what ill effects it may have being a touch high on the Berger hole? I'm good to get through the deer season now. I stacked 5 shots at 40 yards and even shot a fob with no contact, with the other rest I could not shoot the fob due to severe contact.

I really appreciate the help, I'll sing at your weddings,
It'll bring tears to your eyes, I promise.

If a touch high isn't going to be a problem for you. I set mine by the eyeball test and in hindsight, sometimes my eyesight is "a little high, or low" and they all tune and shoot just fine.

i'm a half shaft high in the berger..no issues. had to move my D-loop up to chase it tho. my bow is quieter without the rest slapping the arrow shelf.

"centered thru the berger" is just the jumping off point, i think. tuning and setting up the bow can put it anywhere.

Sounds good thanks for info, gave it the ultimate test this am , got my first deer of season 30 yrds. I'm going to lower the rest when I get new string but I'm confident in the bow after these adjustments.

I wonder if that setup procedure has always been in place for hoyt bows? i going to scold my bow mechanic after hunting season though :D
