Hello everyone. Not to name drop or anything, but I was refered to this forum by Phantom 16.. I believe you guys know him as RJ.. Well anyways, I'm glad he did because it seems that there is a real welcoming atmosphere on this forum, not to mention a ton of information.

A little about me; I recently received an assignment to Fairchild AFB, in Spokane, WA. That's what drove me to seek out info on hunting out west. My family and I are looking to make this our last base, and a permanent home for our family. Im strictly a bowhunter just because I enjoy the challenges of the sport. I love hunting public land also because I feel that it adds to the challenge. So I feel this is the perfect fit for me.

After just a few days of researching the different types of game that are available to hunt out west, I have become excited, as well as over whelmed. In a sense it feels like I'm going to have to learn how to hunt all over again. I've hunted the beautiful Black Hills of SD for 8 years, mainly chasing Whitetails and muleys, as well as Pronghorn in the plains, but that's the closest I've ever been to hunting out west.

I've never taken the oppurtunity to chase elk. But, I will now be in great elk country in Washington, with Idaho & Montana near by. So I will be trading in my treestands for a nice pair of boots.

Well, I'm looking forward to learning all I could from whom ever offers up advice. Im also looking forward to the challenges and rewards of hunting the western states.

Welcome to "the" elk forum Ken. Glad you stopped by. Pull up a log by the fire and stay a while. Lots of good information and folks here. Would recommend you dig into the Archived Tips section and Elknut's Tips and Clips for some light reading . I wouldn't sell those treestands just yet; lots of folks here kill elk using them. If you don't see a topic of discussion you're interested in, feel free to start one. Lastly, watch out for that Swede character that lurks around on here. He's kind of shifty and will do "things" to your log by the fire when you step away for just a second

Welcome to the forum, and also to the great state of Washington Ken! Being in Spokane, you are in and near prime turkey, muley, and whitetail country. And hey the elk doesn't suck either. And that's only Washington. Definitely great access to ID, Montana, and even Utah and Wyoming aren't far off either. Lots of options. I was just in Alpena, SD a couple of weeks ago. Apparently a guy could harvest a couple of pheasants there. At least that's the word on the street.

Thx for the welcomes everyone and its been more than my pleasure to service our county.

WW, I wish I was a little closer to retirement, but unfortunately I have about 8 years to go. Staying in one spot is much easier to do these days in the military. With all the budget cuts, they're not moving us around to much anymore. Oh well, from what I here, Washington is a great place to be "stuck" at. .

Ken welcome. Spokane is a great area. My oldest daughter and her family live there. My son in law is retired A.F. and my daughter spent at least 10 years with them. Hang around here and you will see that RJ is the real trouble maker here. I'm the kid that always is caught with his hands in the cookie jar, which has been nearly cleaned out by others. RJ tells me it is ok to just go and help myself, knowing the cookie jar is now being carefully watched.
