Ok so how far do you guys think we can hear elk bugle from. I am thinking 200-300 yards and not much further. On average of coarse.

This question always seems to come up in conversation. So I am really curious as to what you all think. Thanks

I've heard them a mile or better when calling across an open canyon. Other times it can be like you stated. 200- 300 yards. All depends on conditions like how thick the cover is and some mornings sound just seems to travel farther.

Depends where you are. Some bugles echo through the mountains, and you can hear them for a long distance.

Yes sir, it's all depending on the terrain! 1st photo I can hear bulls a mile away, 2nd photo I can hear them 1/2 mile easily & 3rd photo just a few hundred yards. Where you hunt will determine ones distances!

All sorts of atmospheric conditions effect this. Geographical conditions do as well. Temp, humidity, wind all do. Terrain and vegitation, too.

On a cold day, with absolutely no wind, in wide open country where you have a direct line of sight and the bull is bugling towards you, probably well over a mile. In a different area, lots of steep hills, lots of small ridges and draws, thick greeen vegetation, add some wind and maybe the bull is facing away from you, probably not more than a few hundred yards, just like you said. Each area is different, as is each day.

My parents live 1/2 mile away from a sporting clay range. They planted lots of tall poplars all around and throughout the range to manage noise. Some days its barely audible from their house, some days it sounds like you are on the range. My grandpa's house is about 3 miles from the range and every once in a while you can hear shotguns clear down there.

How about chuckles, how far away do you think you can hear them? I have major issues judging how far away animals are in thick steep green areas.
