Blue Star

Postby ishy » 12 30, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I was just watching a clip of a hunter that left a bull over night and it rained like crazy. He ended up finding the bull late the next day, but they didn't say much of the meat which made me wonder. Anyway it reminded me of some stuff of this stuff I found a few years ago that could be a game changer for hard tracking jobs. It is used by law enforcement and lights up blood in the dark. They make cheaper stuff for hunters now that doesn't retain dna. So I tried it on a pack frame that I had used 6 weeks earlier and had rinsed thoroughly. Lit up like a glow stick!
It comes in tablets that you mix with water in a spray bottle. It has to be full on dark, even moon light will dim the glow. It works a little better in rain as the hemoglobin spreads out and widens the trail. I tried it on a known blood trail (my brother found the deer while I was mixing some up) and you could see particulates smaller with blue star than we could with eyes with our lights on even knowing there was bood there. This won't fix bad shots, but it can help you find a lost trail or find any trail that was there before rain washes what we can see away.
I don't carry it in my pack, but will always have it in camp after seeing how it works. It is around $12 for a 4 pack.

I researched it a bit this summer. I think it could be a usefull tool in our arsenal. I might have to get some just in case. It was awfull rainy last year making a bad hit hard to trail and this could help.

I too like the sounds of this product, I'll have to look into it as well, thanks!
