What scope?

I have a Marlin 44Mag lever action rifle and I am looking to mount a scope on it.
I shoot my reloads of 225gr Hornady FTX LEVERevolution with 21.5gr of H110, for a muzzle velocity of ~1700fps [~1000fps@100yds]

With a zero of 100yds, what scope would best be used for this setup?

You have a hard hitting short range gun. I would go with a 1-4x or 1-6x that is bright for in the timber or brush shooting.

I put one of these on an inline muzzleloader. It should work good for your lever gun. I'm not sure why the price dropped on this scope. They might be closing them out. It used to sell for $260 street price. Now just $129.

On my old 444 Marlin lever gun I had a Redfield widefield fixed 2.5 power on top of see-through mounts that displayed open sights. It had very wide field of view in scope, and the oval open scope mounts were kind of an aperture for the open sights. Helluva brush gun with considerable knock down power firing 265 gr. Hornady CXP hollow points or cast lead. Wish I still had it.

What are the advantage(s) be by having a variable power scope on a short range gun?
Is having a low power [1.5x] a good idea for the light gathering capabilities?

For my kind of hunting in the timber I never take it off the 1.65x power. The higher powers are better for longer shots, or sighting in at the range. The scope is really good in low light. I've had plenty of Leupolds that didn't look near as good.

I would prefer a fixed power scope, but there aren't a lot to choose from in real low power. I couldn't pass up this Nikon. I believe it retailed for $350, so $129 is a steal.

Brad: I agree with still hunter. I too would rather have a good low power, fixed magnification scope. It appears most hunters want high magnification scopes. It is easier to get a 12 power than a 2 power scope. The same trend has developed for binoculars. It used to be that 7x35 was what most binoculars were. Now 10x42 is more common.

I presume you have a Marlin that ejects out the side. It can be tricky putting a scope on a Winchester with top ejection. Hmmmm, I don't think Winchester even makes it in .44, do they?

By the way, why do you want a scope on a brush gun like that?

Yes it is the Marlin 1894S.
Plus, Since it is drilled and tapped for a scope, along with the reloads, I think it will be a good addition to the gun?

I have 2 Winchester '94s 30-30s for use without scopes

But really, when I was in Nebraska the other day hunting whitetails in the riverbottoms, the shots are fairly close, kinda brushy.
Sometimes the shooting lanes are skinny and a scope would be helpful.

I used my 243 to shoot a deer on Thursday, but I would like to reserve that caliber for fur.

Since I have the Marlin, I got to thinking it would be the perfect gun for that application.

A low power scope works great in the timber. I used open sights all my life until my vision started to fail. Then I went to a peep sight. Now that doesn't work, and I have to go to scope on my muzzleloader. I hate it, but it beats not hunting, or wounding an animal, because i'm too stubborn to use a scope.

The Omega I posted is great for close work. I think you'll like it. Another good choice is the Leupold fixed power scopes, but they're a little pricey.

I shot plenty of bear with a rifle. Im going to use a bow for my next one.

I have fixed 4x on 2 of my muzzleloaders for when I hunt ML season in Nebraska and like them.

I have been researching that Nikon scope off and on all day.
Many sites have them discontinued but the reviews are great.
Im thinking Nikon is done making them.

I will probably buy one very soon.

we can do bow brad, that's what im doing. lol. ive done some research an it sounds like a pain in the rear getting a spot to bait. long lines at 3am according to some folks. but, if your interested you know your always invited. ive got a bear an mulie left on my list, would love to have you in camp for it.

oh no, im going to wy this spring. last thing I wanna do is break the law. I had a bear 32 yds from me standing up sniffing the are, with a bear tag in my pocket, this year. first bear I have ever seen In the wild. but bear season didn't open up til the next day, so I didn't shoot. sorry to hijack the thread, bak to scopes

Ive got a decent short range scope with a fold down option for open sights if needed. I wouldnt ask much for it. Let me know if you're considering used
