Favorite cow call?

What is your favorite cow call? Is there a single call you can do it all with, cow/calf, estrus, etc...

For a diaphragm call, I use a Berry cow call. I can get most all the call sounds I need out of it. To change the tone up a bit, I use a Carlton Bull Hooker.

My go to cow call is the Mellow Yellow. To shake things up I'll use the Primos Hyper Lip single. That being said, I'm always looking for the next "best thing" in elk talk.

diaphrgm, I use the yellow one from bugling bull. Reeds, my favorite are the Primos hyperlip single with tone converter and the temptress

I wear it as a necklace and it is very handy and easy to use. If I want to mask my true identity as I walk around, or to call in an elk I prefer a diaphragm.

Woods wise hyperhot is my bread and butter. I can get more sounds out of it than others. Diaphragm is the white primos palate plate...can't remember the name. Haven't had to buy any for a few years, maybe I should be calling more?

My son & I have brought in hundreds of bulls over the years & most fall prey to mouth reeds, the Mellow Yellow, Raging Bull & Challenge (old scream n tormentor) We've used a few external reeds but not many, mouth reeds generally get the nod because of their versatility, we can make about any sound an elk makes including Estrus Buzz with these reeds. It just takes practice & a desire to want to be believable.

Flystraight: I have several that I use, and it varies depending on just what I plan on doing. For a small bull sound or a pure cow call, I like the Mellow Yellow a lot as it is versatile, gives soft mews and is easy to use.

I have this pet cow elk that follows me around like a puppy dog. If I pull her tail and push her belly button at the same time, she lets out the most real sounding cow sounds you ever heard. Trouble is, when I crawl under to push on her, she kicks the crap out of me.

So I have resorted to using my raging bull diaphragm most of the time. Also I have the Carlton fighting cow call and the Temptress. But I hardly ever use either one.

for an external reed I have 3 that I like equally. The Long Ranger, The Fightin Cow and The Temptress. I threw my Primo's external reed calls away.

Glacier Country Hunting Calls Sweet Temptation Or Sweet Seduction Diaphragms or The High Heel Hottie bite call. I will post some audio so you can hear them in action. I don't think I did an Estrous buzz on the Sweet Temptation but it is fantastic.

Pete, yes, there's not many a call I haven't tried in the past or present. Your most versatile calls & sounds will come from a mouth reed, with these such as the Steve Chappel calls & others you can master any bull or cow sound, it takes practice, find the reed that fits you best or close to it & work with it & you can conqueror the desired sounds & tones you are looking for. As far as external reed cow calls go all sound similar, they are easier to master but your sound selection is limited in comparison to mouth reeds. When choosing a mouth reed for a full range of cow sounds choose a single reed call, this will be more user friendly & easier to adjust to & manipulate for most beginners.

As far as an external reed cow call there is an endless selection & all have their pros & cons.

Here's my experience:

Internal Reeds - the smaller framed reeds are easier to learn and you can get the job done. Eventually you will reach a point at which you peak and will find it tough to make certain pitched sounds. Larger framed reeds are a little harder to learn but you'll be able to match competition sounds. Advice, choose which level you want your calling to be at.

External Calls - Bit and blow are great for mews and chirps. Open reeds are great for excited or estrus sounds. Either can come with a hard plastic exhaust port or soft rubber. Plastic gives you more raspy type sounds and rubber gives you better resonance. Advice, choose one bit and one open.

I use the Bull Buster as I want a reed that can do all the calls. One reed for bull and cow sounds ! Keep it simple.

If you want just a cow reed then the Pink Lady is the easiest to learn on and does every sound out there.

For cows I like the BBGC AllStar & Estrus Excited, Phelps ELK Commander, and Hunter specialties Yellow double reed. For external I really like the BBGC Matriarch Cow Calf Call
