Postby ElkNut1 » 07 14, 2012 •  [Post 1]

I've had bulls screaming in my face within 5 yards on multiple occasions, guess what? Most of those dudes lived!!!! (ouch) There is nothing like it if you have not experienced it, talk about an adrenaline rush!!!! (grin)

I'd like to know how many here have enjoyed this same rush & if you haven't would you like too!!!! (grin)

I've never been that close...But sure would like the opportunity. I'm guessing you better have the wind almost perfect to get them in to 5 yrds or less.

I have had one at 6 long steps while I was at full draw. He was facing me head on and let out a bugle and spit all over me. I was knelt down by a 3 foot tall spruce, never shook that bad in my whole life! that bull ran away laughing . That is one that I really wish I could push the DO OVER button on.

I to have brought in big bulls very close on different occasions, but I have never had them scream at me as close as you describe. I have had bulls come in hunting for me, and I have had bulls scream as they stayed back and moved away. When that last happened it was pre=Elknut time for me and I did not know what to do. And yes those belligerent beasts got away unscathed.

I only have three years of elk archery and two years of calling under my belt and definitely a rookie compared to most folks on here. My closes encounter with a bull screaming in my face was at 30 yards but his face received more screaming from me than he could dish out. We took him home. It took about 25 minutes to break a distance of about 400 yard down to 30 yards, and during last 10 minutes under 100 yards, I must have screamed 30 times and most of those were cutting him off. Can't wait to encounter a defensive and territorial herd bull again, again,............., and again.

Mongo scream offs with big mature bull's let alone heard bull's are truly an awesome adrenalin hart pumping experience to have when hunting elk. Although it may not be as rare as elk spit in your face it is up their on the rare scale. I think when most people think of going out and calling bull's in that's what they think is suppose to happen. The truth is 9 times out of 10 it doesn't work out that way and i am not talking about the type of scream off where you and a bull scream back and forth at one another and the next thing you know his bugles are going away. I am talking about the constant exchange of SCREAMING one after another in tell you you're self are red in the face as you start to catch movement in the pines so you get set up the next thing you know their he is panting with his head down all covered in mud urinating on him self eyes the size of baseballs and just as he starts to get in your shooting lane he starts ripping again as you sit their in shock you all most forget what you came for and oh my freak I cant wait till september.

Two years ago, we watched a big bull and several satellite bulls and some cows bed down in this brush patch about 2 acres. Due to the terrain, we had them more or less boxed in. We ambushed them with 2 shooters on the escape route and 1 shooter on the upwind side of the brush patch. He moves in to push the elk towards us. He gets in the middle of them and they won't move. He bugles, the bulls bugle. He starts yelling and waving his arms like he was herding cattle. When he yelled, the herd bull would bugle at him. And when he was yelling profanity, and the herd bull would respond. Finally, they busted out and came straight on the escape route that we had covered. When I saw horns, I drew, hoping they wouldn't catch the movement before they came over the rise. Two satellites stopped about 10 yards, facing me. I would have taken the shot, but I couldn't find my peep. They took off, and I realized the peep was about a foot away from my face. There was no way I could have hit one if they had given me a shot anyhow.

Long story short, I watched a guy yell at a 340" bull and the bull would bugle in his face. I don't know that I've ever had so much adrenaline before.

Since I mainly hunt by myself, being the caller and the shooter, I have had this happen more times than you can imagine and I am not a front on shooter. Elk have a keen since of knowing exactly where your sitting when your calling even from a long distance. I've had a lot of bulls over 35 years of bowhunting them at spitting distance screaming and a couple at arms length. Reached out and touched a couple of lost calves after I tricked them into thinking I was mama. Called a few bulls in for friends and bulls got by shooter to within a few yards of me. Over my lifetime of hunting elk I have had some really cool encounters. This is why I have never hunted them with anything but a bow. Even at the age of 60, I still want to fool that bull or cow and get as close as possible, even if I do not release a arrow. I think my best and funniest  encounter was 4 years ago when a 5x5 was riding a cow coming down my trail. She was walking fast and would not stop for him. Picture this  He's on top of her, his tongue was hanging out, front hooves off the ground, his front legs were dangling off each side of her, back legs shuffling trying to keep up. She got to about 4 yards and spotted me. She spun and jumped out from underneath him, took off and left him standing there with his pants down.(grin) He stood there dumb founded at 4 yds broadside for a good 30 seconds before he spotted me. I never drew my bow because he was not the bull I was after, but really wish I had my video camera out. I know this was not a screaming bull, but defInately a close encounter and had to share. I would say maybe 4 or 5 of the 25 elk I have shot were under 10 yards.

Bulls Screaming In Your Face!

Postby slim9300 » 07 15, 2012 •  [Post 17]

Quite a few times and this very well could be my favorite way to get an adrenalin rush.

Back in 2003 I was sleeping in a bivy on the edge of a meadow. It was a full moon so the elk were sounding off all night and sleep was hard to come by. Around midnight I had fallen asleep when a big bugle sounded off less than 15' from my bivy. I about put my head through the Bibler. :) I'm pretty sure he was screaming at the green lump in the ground I was sleeping in too. I scrambled out of the bivy to try and see the bull that continued walking toward me. My deaf old man was fast asleep in his bivy just 5 yards away and he didn't even flinch. Lol.

THis year will be my first time elk hunting so I am hoping to experience it. I have had a big tom turkey gobble at me from less than a foot with my bow drawn and I couldnt shoot it scareed the crap out of me. Im guessing a screaming elk would be way more intimidating.

I had a huge bull 8 yards away screaming once. it was the most thrilling thing that has ever happened to me with my cloths on. Thinking back i know i was terrified havin an animal that big so close to me. he stood there for im guessing a minute till he winded me and busted out. I couldnt have drew my bow if i wanted to. heck after he busted i could hardly stand i was shaking so bad. The closest i have been to a elk was two years ago when i grabbed a cows back leg as she walked past trying to find my buddy using a calf in distress call. i dont recomend doing that. she almost run over the top of me trying to get away. this year i hope to have another close encounter or several. Anyone who has never hunted elk just has no idea what they are missing. Guess what im not going to tell them lol.

This is the topic that convinced me to buy calls from Elknut and all the various DVD's etc. While I have not been archery hunting and have therefore been able to shoot from a distance, getting close is what I need to do now. While my close encounter was not an elk it was while hunting and was the most amazing thing I have ever encountered while hunting. I was sitting above a small basin where I knew elk were bedded down. Wind was comming up to me so I just sat there and was going to simply wait for several hours. After about an hour I saw movement on the game trail on the small ridge I was on. About 40 yards away was a bobcat (never seen one in Utah before this). I was muzzy hunting and was full camo with face mask. I just sat there and the cat walked right up the trail. At 5 feet away he stops dead in his tracks looking directly at my eyes. He can't figure me out. We lock eyes for about 45 seconds. I then made a slight jump with my shoulders. Cat pissed his pants and jumped straight up 15 feet in the air and grabbed hold of the trunk of an aspen. He climbed up a few more feet. I took off my face mask and sat there for a few seconds not knowing what the hell I just did. Not having a clue what to do I simply started to talk to the cat "its all right kitty kitty, I wont hurt you. You can come down now". The cat did exactly that! He climbed down the tree still 5 feet from me. Once on the ground he spent the next 20 minutes circling me one full revolution. Of course I was not going to let him get behind me and I had my gun pointed at him so I simply turned and watched him the whole time. After his excruciatingly slow circle around me he simply walked off. I was utterly blown away by this encounter and so excited I took a couple of steps and broke a few branches and suddenly the basin below me erupted with elk and I was busted. I was still so shocked I simply watched them run away. I was so happy and satisfied I simply went back to camp and ended my day of hunting. Never regretted not taking my elk that year due to this close encounter. It was this close encounter that made me really begin to wonder what it was like for all you archery folks and how close you can get. This is what has given me the bug and what led me to ElkNuts site...

In 08 I crept in on a herd in an old burn. I got set up about 80 yrds from them and let out a few cow calls and the herd bull made a few light chirps and started taking his cows up the mountain. I quickly grabbed my rattling horns and started raking a small spruce and here he came ready to rumble slowly walking in stiff legged, head held high, and ears pinned back. He stopped at about three yards with nothing but a five foot pine between us staring a hole through me. When he decided I didn't belong there he turned to leave and I stopped him with a cow call and somehow guessed him and 25 yrds and let it fly. I got a complete pass thru and assumed I had just killed a herd bull. I kept hearing a bull bugle all the way up and over the top. I was telling myself he is dead and that must be a satelite bull that just hit the jackpot. After the long wait I started trailing the bull and getting good blood for about a 1/2 mile before it started getting less & less. It was at about the mile mark when it finally ran out. After going back the bull was only 11 yrds when I shoot and the only thing I can figure is I hit him in that no mans land above the lungs and below the spine. It took me well over a month to even want to think about hunting again that was just so depressing. So I didn't get the 3 yard bugle but being down on my knees and looking up at a big bull seeing every breath and drip from his nose was my greatest hunting experience. September can't get here soon enough. Photo is the spot were I shot and I was hoping the bull was dead at the end of the rainbow.

That is beautiful country Dlove!!

I have had several encounters between 5 and 10 yards... Bulls screaming, but there are 2 in particular that get my heart going just thinking about it

My first archery bull was the first.. We were hunting an Idaho wilderness area, my old man was calling this bull in up a steep, STEEP hillside. My uncle was setup parrallel to me at my left... The bull was heading straight for him, at about 15 yards the bull picked up on him and spun around to leave. Dad let out a scream at him... At that point the bull turned back up the hill and marched straight up to me, he stopped on the other side of the tree from me (maybe 1 yard and let out a scream and continued up the hill to my right... Dad stopped him with a cow call and I let him have it at about 3 yards.

The second I was calling for my brother in Idaho.. I worked a decent 6 point bull thru his shooting lane but he came thru on a trot so he had no shot... The bull started circling up the hill right for me so I stayed hidden in the bush I was calling from and quit calling (I had no tag) the bull ended up walking right up to Me and at less than a yard let out a long series of chuckles... I really thought he was going to step on me... I was seriously thinking about smacking him with my bugle so he'd leave, but before I did he stepped behind me catching my wind and busted out. That adrenalin rush damn near killed me I think... When it was all over I was shaking like a leaf.. Lol

Over the past twenty years of hunting Elk I have had several close calls with bulls screaming in my face and neve killed any of them. The close incounter that I will always remember was with a doe one afternoon. I had heard a bull bugling and was working towards him, I had the wind in my face and was walking up a small open hill. As I got to the top of the hill I saw the ears of a deer coming from the other side. I stopped and waited. The Deer was not watching what see was doing see was looking at the ground while walking. She saw me and stopped, her ears came up, her eyes got wide and she frooze. We stood there looking at each other for what seemed to a couple of minuets at a distance of not more then ten feet away. She then started doing the head bob, The snort( which ended up on my pants) and then the foot stomp trying to get me to move. The Deer after trying all her tricks turned and walked back over the hill then turned to go down wind. I backed down the hill went the same dierection as the doe then walked back up the hill. I met the doe on top of the hill again just a few yards farther down the ridge. The doe appeared to be very confused at this point because her down wind tactic did not work well for her. We again had a eye to eye incounter that was followed by more head bobbing, foot stomping and snorting. The doe finally gave up turned and walked away. Priceless

We had been following a herd for over an hour trying to get to the herd bull. Finally he had enough and turned back on us. I thought he was going to walk right over me but there was a downed tree between us and he went around it. He went behind a big fir tree at 5 feet and that is when I drew. He heard me draw being so close and came to a stop behind the tree with his horns showing on either side. He screamed twice wanting the other bull to show himself and I couldn't hold it any longer. When I let down he had enough and went back to his herd. He was just behind the tree from me for what seemed like an eternity but was only a couple of minutes. What a rush it was though.

I have been in a 2 close situations. One was with a raggy 4 pt who was on the other side of a tree from me for about 5 minutes surveying the situation. Didn't bugle just stood there.

The other experience I almost got ran over. I was down in the bottom of a draw with very thick brush. I had a bull interested in my calling and could tell that he was coming. At the last minute I gave out a few more calls and moved about 50 yrds toward the bull and stopped. Wasn't 30 seconds and here he comes a barreling down the hill on the trail I was sitting on. At 6 steps I rolled off the trail and he blew up in the air turning and heading back up the hill he came off of.
Hope someday I have one that close screaming his head off.

Closest i have been is 5 steps,I had to shoot him,My wife was with me ,i had this bull bugling for 3 days,My wife and i was sneaking up toward where the bull would always hang up on me,Could never get him closer,so next morning we were sneaking in on him Diane step on a big limb she never seen,Well that started the music again,He was about 150 yds from us,I bugled he aswered right back,I started busting limbs off of a tree hoping to get him really worked up to come in,He had a big harem which was close to my wife and i,They all took off back behind me well i started running towards them still smashing limbs and brush, I think my wife thought i had gone nuts.Well that was the last straw for that bull he came right for us,you could see his eyes were just red with rage,There were two little fir trees just in front of us on a angle,When he came between those two little fir trees he was 15 feet from us he still never seen us ,I was thinking fast whats going to happen when he comes past the last little fir,He will be five feet from us and he was just ferious, growling all the way,I really didn't want to shoot him i wanted to see how big he was first,Well i may be able to jump out of his way when he came past the last little fir at five feet from us,But how about my wife,Will he swerve away from us or lower his head and try to gore us,I couldn't take that chance so i shot him when he was between the firs.My god what a rush that was. My wife was shaking for a hour after that i was a little lite headed also...Grin

My wife was shaking for a hour after that i was a little lite headed also...Grin

that got "MY" blood pumping,. so how big was he? and how did he taste?
