I am thinking about upping my broadhead weight from 100gr to 150gr
I currently shoot SlickTricks and have no issue with them.

So, what would be the difference if I used a 50gr insert and my 100gr broadheads
instead of going to a 150gr broadhead?

Thought and/or input?

Compound or trad?? With my wheels I see no difference in trajectory between 100 gr. and 125 gr. in the same type of head at normal bowhunting ranges. Never tried going from 100-150. That just might effect things a little more. And I'm sure it would with a recurve or long bow. Guess you'll just have to experiment. LOL!

there are some really small differences, a 150gr broad head will effect the arrow spine slightly more than a 50gr insert will. this is due to it being inside the arrow instead of being on the very end. your foc will still be increased with both but the insert will be slightly less for the same reason not as far in front of the shaft. the one big advantage to inserts is COST its much cheaper to switch inserts than broad heads.

a few questions for ya so I can better answer your question,
what poundage is your bow?
whats the draw length?

id be concerned with weaken the spine of your GT 5575 (400 spine) by adding the weight with either option. you may need to buy new arrows say the GT 7595 (350 spine) or similar arrow

First off if you're just trying to up total arrow wt to a ballpark wt then that will do it, you will gain aprox 30grns. Your original aluminum insert weighs aprox 20grns on its own depending on insert. This is why a 30grn difference not 50grn gain. Most arrows that already tune well for a specific setup can handle 30 grn more, it will aid in penetration but won't add a whole lot this is why with a small grain gain it would most likely be to gain total arrow wt. For example 3- 2" blazer vanes weigh aprox 16-18 grn & you know 3 of those in your hand feels almost weightless, just a thought! However it is best to add that extra wt upfront for maximum penetration. If it were me I would add the extra wt in the insert not the head for reasons mentioned above.

I looked it up and your close to border line already with the 400 spine if your using the standard GT insert they weigh 12grs so as Paul suggest you would only be adding 38grs to the front. they might tune just fine, you would have to test it just to see. I could send you a 50gr insert weight so you can play with it before you buy anything. I also have a couple 150gr field points I could send you if you would like.

I have 50gr inserts that I use for my recurve, along with 145gr broadheads.
I appreciate the offer tho!

I have shot the 145gr broadheads in my Drive [with standard GT inserts] and they fly sooooooo nice.

i use insert weights behind 100 gr heads. i add 30grs.

sure i could save myself some headache by buying 125gr heads. but i have a crazy rational.
i shoot primarily Montecs. (i can sharpen them). at least with the montecs, if i go up to a 125gr, the broadheads are physically bigger. bigger, in my mind means a bigger airfoil, which means they should be affected by any tuning issues more.

my friend shoots 125gr thunderheads. they look like spear points. huge! i like small broadheads. hides my bad flight issues "more". and to add nerdiness. mathematically, the smaller broadheads should "shear" into flesh more efficiently. (negligible difference, i'm sure)
