I have a very nice spotting scope that I never want to bother packing b/c it is so heavy. I've been looking at the monoculars that vortex makes that are not near as much magnification but only weigh around a pound. Since I never carry my spotter, I'm thinking one of these might be nice instead of my spotter, not necessarily as an upgrade.

My question is, has anyone here ever used something like this instead of binoculars? I have read they aren't as good for lots of glassing b/c of eye strain. I don't ever glass for hours on end, but I would like to hear from others with experience.

I was wondering the same ...

I have a decent set of binoculars ... but rarely use them where I hunt ... a monocular, I think, would be useful ... it would be easy to carry and use to check out "suspicious" shapes in the woods. I'll be following this thread.

(BTW, the Vortex was the monocular I was looking at, too.)

Yes, iIve used the 8X36 Monocular in the past, it has it's advantages for the tighter areas where binos just are not needed such as in thicker elk country hunts. It did just fine but does not replace Binos on more open country Elk, Deer, Goat, etc hunts. It sure is light & compact though. You can get them for under a 100 bucks & yes they are available to us!
