Archery form

Postby ctdad » 12 11, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Have any of you ever taken a formal archery shooting lesson? I shot a bow for about 20 years before I ever had one and it improved my shooting immensely. Now I'm looking to learn how to shoot a hinge release and plan to get some instruction in that as well. I read a short article by Randy Ulmer that recommended all hunters should learn true back tension to improve their shooting so that is my off season goal. I don't plan to hunt with it as that was not his advice either. Just use it to improve your form.

i just did!

it really was a lot of new information. big takeaways: back tension. and i just used my regular release. it was really interesting. i have a bad habit of holding the "shaft" (insert joke here) of my release with my thumb and index..before the shot. using back tension..you do not. you affect torque IMMENSELY like this. you actually see your peep move from side to side.

this guys suggest back tension even if you hunt. something about how our brains can only do one thing at a time. it was fun. tiring but fun

I went to PSE's shooter school and dealer's school in 1997. They both did a lot for my archery education. After the dealers school tuning a bow and arrows was 1000% easier as the mystery was all gone. Of coarse it had the downside of causing me to realize many pro shops are managed by hacks.

In 2012, I took 2 personal lessons from a coach and it helped me a lot. He mostly coaches JOAD.

In 2012, I switched from RH to LH because I am left eye dominate. My form shooting LH was terrible. He gave me a list of things to work on. Target panic is still my worst enemy even after doing some blind bail shooting.

Last year at the World Archery Festival in Vegas, all the release companies had tables to try their releases. On a whim, I bought a back tension release. The owner of Carter helped me choose one that works for my small hand. Since I tore a shoulder's tendons last year, I have not had the guts yet to try it. My shoulder is still healing from the 2 tears.

ctdad and pointysticks are spot on to use the back tension release to help with your shooting even if you use a wrist release for hunting. I will definitely go to an archery coach when I am ready to try my back tension release. Perhaps cure my TP once and for all.

I've been learning to shoot the longhorn Hunter back tension release made by scott. Is intimidating at first. Getting better but I'm still blind bale shooting. It's a fun project to do inside during the cold winter. I took a short lesson on it to get me started which really helped.
