Keeping Broad Heads Sharp

Does anyone use anything to "coat" their broad heads to keep them sharp while taking them in and out of the quiver all the time?

I want to keep them as sharp as possible and I'm not in a position to buy a foam free quiver this season.

I do not coat my broad heads. I use a practice broad head to cut the quiver slots for my hunting arrows, but that is about all. I have never had an issue with inadequately sharp arrows.

No sir, don't do anything with my heads differently either. I do check them now & then & no doubt we all should. Not all heads keep their edge as time goes by spent in the quiver, this is especially so for cut on contact heads. They seem to need a bit of honing every few days for maximum sharpness to be retained. These days most sharp out of the package heads in the fixed blade models hold their edge pretty darned good. Keepem sharp & good luck!

I keep the same arrow in the same slot of the quiver all the time. That way the head fits in the pre cut foam every time without having to cut a new slot. Also, I pack 4 arrows. When I need to pull one out of the quiver, it is always the same arrow. After 3-4 times I re-sharpen it. The other 3 arrows stay shaving sharp so long as I keep them in the quiver. I use the KME broadhead sharpener. DANG! That thing makes them scary!

I do the same as WW.

Even tho you may think the broadhead has lost its edge, most times they are still very, very sharp.
I touch up mine every once in awhile thru-out a week + hunting.

A good way to test the sharpness is to tightly wrap small rubber bands around a dowel or film container.
Take your BH and draw it across the rubber bands to see if they roll with the edge or if they cut and pop.

The rubber bands imitate tendons, blood vessels and muscle groups

I use the KME broadhead sharpener. DANG! That thing makes them scary!

I don't have one but have been wanting one for years. They are awesome and the guy who makes them is a great person for what it's worth. If anyone can't figure out what to get me for Christmas there ya' go.

I use Snuffer broadheads and I coat them with Vaseline/QTip. But I do this since they are carbon steel and they could rust. I think it also helps so the metal doesn't oxidize.

I don't coat my broadheads with anything. If I have a spare, I will heat it up to cut the foam in my quiver but thats it. I always take the same arrow out of my quiver so that one gets a touch up with the G5 broadhead sharpener every so often. Nothing special...

the foam is much softer than the broadhead.no? i guess if there is dirt in the foam.

i dont worry about it much..i do take care to keep them from bouncing together in the broadhead box. i put the broadheads into treble hook protectors. 3 blades only.

hey, just a thought. i just bought a tightspot quiver and there is NO foam. only "dents" in the hood that old just the very tip of the broadheads.

really neat quiver. lots of cool engineering to it.
