Novemeber( Post Rut) Calling

I'm new to the forum and new to archery hunting. I took my first mule deer buck on my first hunt this year(spot and stalk). I have a mid Novemember Colorado bull hunt. I have been asking as many hunters as possible , what is the calling straegy or overall hunting strategy to get close enough to stick a bull? Any help would be appreciated.

xforce, I see you are not getting inundated with responses, so let me try. I have hunted in November some. It used to be with a rifle, but I have tried a little in Western Oregon cow hunting. I admit mt November bow hunting experience is minimal and has been fruitless. When rifle hunting I went with spot and stalk hunting.
Recommendation: Try to find good fresh sign and in turn locate the elk. I have called bulls a little in early November, but they are pretty quiet then. I have not had them come to my call. If you want to call, I would go with soft regular cow sounds. Best wishes on your hunt.

When hunting Elk in November there are many variables to take into account. Most guys have quit calling to the elk... they rely on spot and stalk tactics.
Here are some things to think about... Are any bulls, still with the cows?? if there are the bulls will at least do what I call herd maintenance bugles. That may be enough to get you a location at least so you can make a plan from there. I have called in bulls and cows in November. I am also the first to admit calling is more hit and miss in November than in Sept but... it can still be done. I had 2 friends hear elk bugling last weekend. (NOV 2 3rd) and I called in a bull for my wife on OCT 26th of this year that came in bugling his head off . She shot him at 50 yards opening day of the MT Rifle season. 100 guys in pickups drove by that day. Only 6 bulls were killed in all of NW MT that day that came thru check stations. This bull was taken as a direct result of calling. We are hunting country that is very thick and it is harder to spot elk in the open, So spot and stalk is harder to do here. I have been helping a local guy with his calling. He shot a bull early last week that he rattled in. His brother had just commented that it sounded like elk fighting,they hear crashing and,see a bull elk running right to them.He then started using cow calls to stop the bull for the shot. I used to do a late November bow hunt for elk where we honed some of our calling for late season elk. Some questions to ask yourself about the area you will be hunting. If the area is open enough spot and stalk at least until you get close enough to call in an elk. If snowy can you track them until calling is possible? What calling scenario will you use to entice a bull into range this late. I have used regular cow/calf talk to start and then worked into some estrous calls. I have used raking and bugling to make bulls think there possibly is one hot cow left. It all depends on too many variables to cover here. I NEVER leave the pickup without an elk diaphragm during the season even if I have already got one I would still try to call it in just for fun. You just have to weight the situation just like any other time is it better to call or not? Do you have anything to lose?? Hope this helps ----> Troy
