LIVE - Colorado 3rd Rifle elk hunt

Postby Huntography » 11 02, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I'm filming Dave, a 73 year old elk killer.

This is his last elk hunt.

Darn it. Can't upload images again from iPhone.

Were on a heard of 12. Tracking in 4 inches of fresh snow.

Wish us luck.

Sweet, stay with them, tracking down moving elk in the snow is no easy task they can go for miles & even walk right out of the snow line!

Should we call? If so what works best at this time of year.

Dave likes to still hunt and spot and stalk. He doesn't call but has killed more elk that my age.

Any advice helps.

Bluebird skies. Big snow storm coming tonight.

Keep at it Rudy
I wouldnt call.
Watch the edges of timber until the very last light as the elk will filter out with only minutes to see them
The bulls will come out last, following the cow(s)

Good Luck

Thanks guys. But it looks like they have moved off this mountain and down through a saddle and into an adjacent lower valley.

All tracks lead there. Makes sense as the storm was getting ready to hit and it's going to dump about 16 inches of snow in Breckinridge today and tomorrow.

We did all we could and on Saturday we were literally a few steps behind.

Dave shared his 60 years of hunting with me on camera - tips, tactics and life lessons along with some of his offbeat tactics.

He is quite the character and is like the mayor in town as he used to be a pro champion skier too.

I only hope to be that hungry to keep hunting at 73.

Cheers to my new friend Dave.

Agree with Cnelk, I would not call in that situation, do not give your position away because you will if you give even one small cow sound. Wait them out & stay alert, I've had bulls come out first in the middle and at the end after cows are out, this time of year it can be a roll of the dice when & if they show.

I'd get elevated the best I could to see as much of the area as possible so I could see them no matter where they came out. Be careful with your movement elk can see things at great distances so try to only move to get position when you know they cannot detect you. Watch the wind do not let it drift in their direction even for a moment or they will slip out the back way.

Dave is 73 years young. He's hunted for. 60 years. Killed over 40 elk or so. He had the passion and drive to keep hunting but his kegs and stamina are not what they used to be.

He told be for health, age and monetary reasons, this was going to be his last elk hunt.

I hope come next year, he has more fuel in the tank to climb the mountains of Colorado again. If not, it was an honor to film him and document some of his wisdom and hi jinx on camera.
