1st Year Elk Hunting GMU 4 in CO

A buddy and I are headed up to GMU 4 with 4 Elk tags and a Mule deer Doe tag. Just was wondering if anyone has any advice for the area. Should I try to get a OTC bear tag? I was looking at trying to hunt by black hill? not sure, I have never been there. Thanks and good luck to all

Black Hill?? I suppose you mean Black Mountain! I was up there this afternoon on the Freeman Reservoir road. Close to 8 inches of snow around the lake area. Nobody was doing all that good. I think there was only one bull and one cow taken in the area so far this season. Further down the mountain one camp had 3 bulls and a muley buck. Bring good waterproof boots as everything is wet and sloppy right now. I didn't get a chance to go up FR 110. I don't think I'd waste money on a bear tag. The sheep ranchers keep them thinned out. --ww---we are planning on hunting the other side of Hwy 13 . Do you know of any reports of the elk crossing Hwy 13 yet?

Not yet! There are always a few that move out early but the main migration usually doesn't happen until late November or early December, depending on the weather and hunting pressure. About all I can tell you for sure is that all the hunters up around the west and south side of the mountain are reporting that they are not finding any tracks in the snow.

We have been hunting that area for about 20 years and remember when the migration came beg of Nov. Of course that is when it would snow a lot more, early. Didnt know with some of the early snow if some of them had started to head that way. Again, thank you for the info. We will be heading out that way this thur.
