Weird Terms

When I worked for the Forest Service I got used to hearing new technical terms being bandied about. It drove me nuts. Usually I had to ask what they meant as they had no meaning to anyone not in the circle of a relatively few. Sometimes I ran into those terms when I was reviewing material prepared for the public. It was put out with no explanation. Employees had become used to the term and never stopped to consider that most of the world had no idea what their new term meant.
On this forum I read about the "estrus buzz" which has nothing to do with a cow in estrus. Humm. Then I read about a term invented to describe a bull throwing trash into the air with his antlers. I hope it offends no one, but I would like to suggest "estrus buzz" and whatever that other term was get replaced. "Panic call" or "search call" is more in keeping with what the elk is saying. "Thrashing" is closer to describing what a bull is doing by throwing material in the air.
Maybe you can think of a term that better describes these elk acts. Would someone like to come up with some better terms, that even a novice like me understands, and help an old Swede maintain his sanity?

If I recall correctly, the term estrus buzz was started because someone seen a cow use it and assumed it was an 'estrus only' sound. I completely agree that the name should fit the definition. But once it becomes the norm, it's hard to change terminology.

BTW, to maintain your sanity implies you still have it. And we'll..........

elk hunting has evolved but elk language between the elk has not. the English language has words with more than one meaning depending on the context taken and with the onslaught of the internet new terms have appeared that at first are foreign to most of us but soon become the norm.

The term hucking was coined by Bill Allard. Bill is a very well respected bowhunter. And it does replicate or imply to a bull thrashing or throwing things in the air. I'm with you Swede. I think Bill could have maybe come up with a little better word to describe it.

The term Estrus Buzz was coined by a well respected person right here on this site. At least he is the first person I ever heard use the term. But I'm with you Swede. It is nothing less than a panicked or very nervous/ lost animal looking for companionship. Like you, I tried to get this point across several times on various threads. It just took a lot longer for it to soak in. LOL!

Popping Grunt is another one. there is no grunt to it at all. It is a bark! Actually it is a nervous bark. If there was only one call I could ever use, this would be the one. It will stop a traveling elk dead in his tracks every time. And many times it will make one that is hung up in the brush show himself.

In church I can talk about The Angel of the Lord being an epiphany and sound very scholarly and pious, but lose almost everyone. At work I could speak with acronyms and lose many folks. If we are truly trying to communicate to people and help new hunters, lets at least start by showing them some respect. I am with ,and I know he has tried in the past to work on this problem. Lets work on clearing up our terms rather than trying to teach new hunters speaking in elk babble. The Apostle Paul said it is better to speak with just a few words, that are understood, than to use thousands in an unknown language.

For the terms we are discussing I would change them as follows:
Estrus buzz to "Panic Trill"
popping grunt to "ID Bark"
huking to "Thrashing"

Maybe these suggested terms can be improved upon, but at least, to me, they capture the essence of what the elk are doing or saying.

Here's my suggestions:

Estrus Buzz - "Where du at"
Popping Grunt - "Who dat"
Huking - "I'm all dat"



On a serious note, Panic Trill doesn't really fit. The buzz is really more than a panic sound. The other two sound good.

Ok, Ok. The sound is a trill. The elk can't find the others, so maybe "Location Trill". I thought "Panic Trill" was a stroke of genius, but maybe it was the result of falling out of my stand from too high up.
