Unit 5 observation, and help

Postby proline » 09 30, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I have spent the last 6 years hunting elk down near Kremmling, my son and I went to gmu 5 and spent several days riding and hiking and looking for a place to hunt on public land. We headed in on CR550 and started really walking and looking a lot around CR550 and CR503. We searched out places all the way out to Whiskey Park.

So here is my question,we did not find any significant number of elk rubs where you would think they should be, in fact did not find hardly any rubs anywhere not even old rubs. I was really surprised by this, the land looks perfect for elk and supposedly there are a lot there. From what I saw on foot, they are not really there or perhaps just pass through. I didn't even find much in the way of deer rubs either. What is going on? Do the deer and elk just not rub much at all in that area or are they passing through only, or are they not there in any number at all?

My son (20) and I are experienced hunters but he has never taken an elk so I am trying to help increase his odds this year by trying a new area. If anyone has advice feel free to message me.

Any suggestions on where to hunt in unit 5?

Thanks all and I hope you all have a great hunt this year,

Don
