Colorado season so far (bugle report)

Postby Coveyleader » 09 16, 2013 •  [Post 1]

I hunted the first five days of the season and there were a few bugles around the 2nd. I passed two legal bulls in that period and killed a cow with a cow tag.

i just got back from another five day hunt and they were bugling very good yesterday and today. In one basin I saw 6 different bulls and was under 50yds of two and passed another legal bull. All were sounding off and it was one of those scenarios where you go from one to another. The last two days elk were up until noon or so.

Some interesting notes, all the little bulls were screaming and had cows. No cow group no matter how small didnt have a bull with some shape or form.

Little bulls can sound big, take my word on that.

The two big bulls I saw were cowless. Today that changed. One had 6 cows and another had about 20. Today was the first day I heard and saw bigger bulls which were top end for this public otc area. They were loaners until today.

So for this trip I saw about12 bulls and could have killed only one. My partner shot one but it was lost, bummer 15 yd shot.

ML season is open and they were killing elk! I heard 8 shots and they were way in wih us. So much for lazy ML hunters (never bought into that).

So or western CO they are sounding off very good. Being where the elk are at is key as always. One drainage hot, the next cold.

5 day trip next week.

good luck

I just got back from unit 16. only heard 2 bugles during the daylight, an as soon as I made a sound he was done. I heard 3 bulls in the dark but they each bugles 2-3 times an were done. glad others are hearing em.

Thank you everyone for keeping the information flowing.

After 3 weeks of elk hunting, I am taking a break to do my first deer hunt this weekend. It is a backcountry hunt. The area only has a small elk herd, so I am likely not hunting elk unless my one call sequence gets a responding bugle or I see the herd.

I am back to elk hunting next week, so I appreciate everyone giving a report of their elk hunts.
