I hate hunting in the rain but cant stand sitting here at the house during elk season and I have days off. so, I may go hike in 6 miles and hunt for a day then come out. ive found a spot in a national forest that im sure I can kill an elk, just not sure I wanna be in that far by myself in the rain with an elk down. yes im a flatlander, lol

Just go for it. My friend Matt, he's a crazy elk hunter, he always tells me that the biggest thing I should "worry about" is getting an elk's nose to hit the dirt. He says that once that happens, it's only a matter of mind over matter. When you get an elk down, no matter how far from the truck or how little assistance you have, you will be up to the task. Break it down into quarters, hang them up high and in the shade (preferably over a creek) and put one foot in front of the other until it's done. It's as simple as telling yourself that you have 335 days to heal and convince yourself that it "really wasn't that bad".


Of course . . . you know all of this, you have killed plenty of Wapiti . . . you just need someone with a hot piece of iron to poke you with.

I have lots of vacation to take and Im gonna wait for the last week to go back up...

I have everything loaded an ready, but chance of rain was raised to 80 so think I will wait. trees were literally falling over last week and I wasn't a fan of the lightning, so think I will wait til Monday and go then. maybe

I will let you know how it is. I have 3 days to hunt this week (thur-sat) so I am going out.

The one thing I worry about is the wind. I tried opening week to hunt in the evenings but the storms that week made the wind swirly every afternoon and evening.

I am having the same dilemma.

I could take Thurs/Fri of this week off, beat the muzzleloader crowd by a couple days, but tolerate the rainy weather forecast for the foreseeable future. Or I could take those couple vacation days at the end of the season, hunt the weekend only and let the muzz have at it, and hope the weather gets drier and the rut is game on.

I wish I could take off the whole month - that'd make the decision easy...

well I stayed home, right or wrong, I figured with a 6 mile hike in everything from clothes, me, sleeping bag would be at least damp if not wet. ive got some family obligations this weekend, so, im heading out either sunday nite or prob Monday morning for 3 days, come back an work for 3, then im off for the duration.
however, do bulls bugle in the rain. just curious as how rain affects elk

Bulls definitely bugle in the rain; barring a serious deluge they continue business as usual. I personally don't mind brief periods of rain, but being cold and unable to dry off for days in a row is not very fun for me.

They will bugle in the rain but the hottest elk bugling/activity I have seen to date was right after it stopped raining. Before the rain hit it was hot and quiet. Rain moved in and moved out and there were bulls coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches bugling their heads off. I got on one but couldn't get him to come inside 100 yds. It was little too open. He knew he should see an elk but there wasn't one there. I went back to camp and got a buddy and went back there in the evening. I called him into my buddies lap and he was shaking so bad he missed. The most fun I've ever had hunting. I'm headed west tomorrow and will hunt all week, rain or shine. I'll bring an extra pair of boots this year. Gore Tex or no, they'll all be soaked.
