zebra headlamps

Thinking about getting a zebra headlamp. Then one battery size can be taken on backpack hunt for all electronics. Kind of torn between getting it in a the spot light or the flood light version. Some times it nice to see out a ways, but generally its used for close in work like walking, around camp use and butchering at night. Any input?

Dan, send Slim9300 or Dotman a PM and ask them their thoughts on which they would recommend for your use. They both have a few of them. I picked up the flood a few weeks back (502W I think) and it is amazingly bright. That said, the spot light version is out of this world from the reviews and what both Conlan and Tim have told me. I own a couple of the normal varieties (PETZL and other brands) and they don't even compare in brightness. Pricey? Yes, but as with anything, you get what you pay for. RJ

They make one with a hybrid beam. It's got an 80 degree flood with an 11 degree spot in the center. I've got one on order.

I currently have the H502d which is the 120 degree daylight balanced flood, and I personally like to see a bit further out.

I just bought an H51 around the first of the Month (200 lumens), and now I see the product has been discontinued.

So far it has been an amazing light, I will be putting it to the test this weekend on a blacktail hunt.

I just picked up a 502W for this coming season. Haven't used it yet but just messing around with it in the house. Looks like it should work great. For the weight and specs, they're tough to beat.

Get both

I haven't looked recently but if I remember only the 502 series are left. I have the 502w and the 600w and both will be in my setup this year. The 600w is for late night tracking or getting out of a hell hole at 2am. The 502w will be more for night camp chores and early morning travel or late night travel that is easy or on familiar ground.

The 600w allows me to see out to 100 yards but also lights up everything within 30-40 yards very well. The 502w will give me enough light out to 20 yards.

I prefer the flood and if there is a spot that is just added bonus but I will tell you both of the lights mentioned above will out due most others, IMO. I had a black diamond Icon that didn't put out as much light as my 502 does and it took 4AA batteries and was almost heavier then both of these lights put together.

So it all comes down to your personal preference if you want a flood or spot.

If you want to stick with the same battery (AA), I would go with either the H51w or the H502w. It looks like they are discontinuing the H51 series for some reason. If you want to see past 20 yards and keep with the same battery, the H51w is your only good choice.

I take the H600w for when I need a lot of light and the ability to see 100 yards and the H502w for everyday use and around camp. Total weight of both with the battery for each is a mere 5.13 ounces. Both lights have become backcountry staples for me.

I'll be getting the new H600w MK II hopefully in time for my hunting trip to MT this year. The dang thing makes 1020 lumens on high output for 2 hours, or at a more practical light output, 65 lumens for 30 hours. Either way, 1020 lumens in a 1.4 ounce (empty) headlamp is crazy. I will be giving my H600w to my hunting partner for his birthday and even at 645 lumens it seems like daylight out to 40 yards or so.

That is crazy bright for a 1.4 oz headlamp. Next year's purchase you already talked me into a 502W this year.

The 51 series is being replaced with the 52 series.

The 600 MKII in the spot version is going to be super bright light that reaches way out there. They finally figured out how to deal with the heat on such a high output and were able to release the light. The only issue is the 18650 cell and the charger but the light itself is amazing for the 1.4 oz.

I ordered the 600MKII headlamp (90*) yesterday and will run the 502W as my headlamp.

That's right. I forgot about that email awhile back on the new H52 series. I still don't see why they would discontinue it before the H52 is available.

They took the temperature controlled automatic light output adjustment from the S6330 flashlight. Pretty amazing technology.

Do the Zebra headlamps have a way of altering the light to red or green or something. I have always used a colored light so as to not spook game on my way in each morning. I want to order a zebra, but didn't see anything about that option.....thanks

I don't think they do. I ordered the H51, is hasn't arrived yet, but that model doesn't. I'm used to using a red lamp as well, mainly to not alert the whitetails while making my presence known to other hunters while I travel on public lands. Though on my Colorado hunt I'll be traveling unfamiliar routes and no open ground so I went with a brighter headlamp.

Nope. Don't worry about it. I have never had a headlamp spook elk. I think it looks like the moon to them or something. lol.
