Kifaru Shelters

I'm looking for a lightweight shelter that offers wood-stove, size and comfort for high elevation elk hunts. Has anyone out there used Kifaru's Sawtooth, or other shelters in the field in conjunction with their collapsible lightweight stoves? I'm curious if a sawtooth tent and a packable aluminum stove is the way to go. I would appreciate some feedback before dropping that sort of cash

I have the 6-man tipi ... I love it. It's generally either just my wife and me, or my son and me. For two people, it's a little large, but allows us to spread out, make a mess, and have a couple dogs in there, too, if we want.

The Sawtooth seems like a better shelter for someone packing in with camp on their back, though. Less space, but some of the space in that 6-man is "wasted space". The Sawtooth seems more efficient. I love the design -- and it is very adaptable to different camping styles.

The stove is wonderful, especially in the morning, or in rain. I haven't done any snow camping in it as I don't have the SST pins for it ... (I don't do enough winter camping anymore to justify the expense.) For me, I love the floorless shelter, but snow camping is one limitation. Oh, I know it can be done, but the extra $100+ for longer pins, plus that weight, is a put-off. If I was doing much winter camping and looking for a higher-end tent that would last forever, I'd look at Hildeberg tents. Son spent a month in one in AK, and was very impressed. Rode out some serious storms in comfort, and said it was quite packable.

Seek Outside is a sponsor here, and from what I hear they have very respectable products. I don't have experience with them. I will say that nothing I own from Kifaru has failed at anything, ever. The fact that the Seek Outside guys have the guts to compete with Kifaru speaks quite a bit about them as well, and favorably. Anyway, you should look at their products. I'm interested in their LBO shelters, myself. One of my projects for 2014 will be to work on a one-man camping system, so I'm considering them as well.

Neighbor has a Ti-Goat tipi ... don't know much about it, but have heard good things.

I've used a Kifaru Supertarp, then a Seek Outside BCS, and now a Seek Outside LBO. The stoves are very nice to take the chill off and help dry gear, and it gives you something to do after the sun goes down which is very nice. I love floorless shelters because it is so easy to just walk in with muddy boots and not worry about getting the floor dirty.

I am using a Kifaru Megatarp this year. It has the option to add in the annex with stove jack. How many people are you looking at hunting with?

Another option to look at would be the Go Lite Shangri-La 5 Tent and get a stove jack added to it. It has the option for a removable nest if you don't want the floor or bug protection.

You should check out Tarptents too. I was looking into the Supertarp, but needed bug protections due to my hunting area. Tarptent are really good quality and lightweight. I love mine.
