Smart Phone Apps?

Guys (and gals), I "finally" broke down and traded in the old flip phone (RIP, Samsung Rugby) for a new Iphone.. Will probably take me a year to get used to it, LOL. Although I do not get cell service in any of the areas I hunt, I'm downloading a few of the apps for general purpose. Google earth for obvious reasons, NFL mobile (duh), and a timer cam so I can set a delay on my phone. What are some of the smart phone apps you cats use?

Hunting GPS Maps has one that that has land ownership on it but it cost around $35.

I use tapatalk a lot, love pocket weather, and I have a bunch of tree ID, bird ID apps from Audobon.

A great one is Gas Buddy. It uses your location and tells you where the cheapest fuel is.

Mine is an Iphone 5. I've currently grabbed the TimerCam (so I can use the clipshot), google earth, NFL mobile, the flashlight, and gas buddy. This pretty cool stuff! Guess I should have upgraded sooner, LOL.

What is the Phone Skope app about? Haven't been able to find it...yet.

A friend told me about a few more.

1. Convert Free - converts any type of measurement to another.
2. Magnifying Glass w/light by Falcon in Motion LLC - You can magnify small print, put some light on it, and take a picture if you want.

Congratulations on the upgrade! It took me and my husband years to finally splurge on smartphones, and we have not regretted it. Here's a list of the apps I use the most (in no particular order). I haven't tried the HuntingGPS app yet, but probably will soon. Enjoy your new phone!

GoogleEarth: Satellite maps of the entire earth. A sorry substitute for the real Earth, but a decent antidote to cabin fever and Mondays.

Accuweather: Forecast when you'll finally get to use your outside voice.

Moonrise: If you're a sucker for a full moon, here's your app. It tells you what phase the moon is in, when it rises, and when it sets, past, present, and future.

Sunrise Sunset Lite: Get the exact sunrise/sunset time, including civil twilight and dawn. Pretty spiffy if you ever become a vampire, or are on run from the law, or you're out hunting. Or all of the above. You never know...

Field&Stream Reader: A little something to wear your phone battery down while in waiting in reception rooms or standing in line.

Shazam: Identifies music you're listening to, so you can find out who sang that silly ditty from a commercial.

Fandango: Find movies and movie times on the fly. (Popcorn app must be downloaded separately.)

Merriam Webster Dictionary: This app puts the entire English language at your fingertips. Use before hitting "send" on that e-mail complaining about co-workers who wear too much colon.

Yelp: The good, the bad, and the ugly. Customer reviews on all kinds of businesses, restaurants, and services.

Urbanspoon: Similar to Yelp, but limited to restaurants: The good, the bad, and the cockroaches.

GroceryIQ: Create custom grocery lists by scanning UPC codes. You can remake and check off lists endlessly. So go ahead, scan the holey moley out of your house.

iHandy Level: Never again root around in your closet for that broken level you last used in 1993, because it's right there on your phone.

Skype: You can video chat or conference in people who can't use Apple's Facetime videoconferencing.

Wikipedia: Impress complete strangers with your encyclopedic knowledge of red-eyed tree frogs.

Craigslist Mobile: Because there are sweet deals to be had. (Just not by me so far...)

PoetryFoundation: Mindful entertainment for long lines and waiting rooms (unless you *really* want to take that Cosmo dating quiz again).

Paperless ($2.99): Customizable app for making multiple quick lists that can be backed up to the cloud or to your e-mail. Now I can actually find that fabulous movie or book someone recommended without having to root through the recycle bin to find the receipt I scribbled it on.


And here are some apps that I don't use, but that might satisfy your inner child (and which my outer child highly recommends):

Talking Tom: A cartoon cat records what you say and plays it back in a silly voice. All the fun of helium without the headache afterwards.

Fart Machine Lite: 'Nuff said.

i love my Dictionary app. helps me appear smarter than i really am.

Songify. you record a sentence, it autotunes your voice and puts it to music. great for defusing an angry wife. for example, you can say,, "no really, those pants dont make you look any fatter" record it, and it will turn it into a techno song. just kidding about the wife comment. please dont say anything so dumb. use the dictionary app to find much more sensitive words

weather channel apps. self explanatory. nice to know if you need to pack a puffy jacket to elk camp.

your credit card company app. if they dont have one, find another credit card.

my FAVORITE..is HEARTRATE. it tells me my heart rate by touching a finger to the camera. awesome.

Hey Cliff! which HEARTRATE app did you choose? There are 33 of them. My wife suffers from A-fib so a good heart rate monitor would be a handy thing to have. Possibly even a life saver.

The gas budy app is awesome!! You can also search gas prices along your route and see what they are. We used it last September on our trip from PA to Colorado. We then planned accordingly. Some states we avoided buying fuel in. It will save you a few dollars!!

For hunting I use Trimble Outdoors, View Ranger,Fishing Spots and Hunting Aid. Think I like Timble the best.

First, look into the websites that list free and sale apps. Most are free or $0.99, but some are more....and they all add up. I have some pricy apps I got on special sales. Like anything, be a smart consumer.

Find a better camera and video app. The standard ones are usually enough, but there are some special purpose ones I like. I film video often using FiLMIC Pro (got it free) and take pictures with Camera+. I also have "Fast Camera" that can take a series of quick pictures. I've used it to capture my wife's arrow in mid-flight!

Check out field guides. I have iBird pro (got it on sale) that helps identify birds. Be careful: while these often work without a signal, that means they take up a lot of storage space.

MotionX-GPS: I like this one because I can download maps and aerial photos and use them even when I have no cell service
AChrono: it didn't work for me. Supposed to use sound to determine arrow speed but it didn't seem very accurate
iShoot3d: also disappointing.

Pictures: I like editing photos. I'm a big fan of the "splash" effect, where you make a picture greyscale, then select areas to be colored. It's particularly great for highlighting an animal and hiding pools of blood and other things that detract from a photo. Try Color Effects, Aviary, Pic Stitch.
