Solid Broadheads - Brand New

I just ordered up some new broadheads and will be testing them out. Probably not a lot of guys have heard of these heads, yet, but they sure look like something I want to try out before season rolls around! Very similar to the German Kinetics, but better steel (S30V) and a steel ferule.. and they're built in Boise, ID! They're pricey little buggers, but Steve offers a lifetime warranty on them if you ever manage to damage one.

Check these out and let me know what you think. I'll post my review on them when I get them in hand and have some time to test against my Shuttle Ts and Muzzy 3-Blades.

As long as they fly with my other heads I'd imagine they'll be coming with me into the woods this Fall. They sure look like they can take a beating, and I'd love to have them on the business end of my arrow if I ever made a less than perfect shot.

I don't generally like being the guinea pig, but time is short and these have my interest!

How easy would it be to resharpen?? I do like the design, the bleeder being up front is interesting!! Always been a fan less moving parts and cut on contact.

He claims very easily by leather stropping. He's working on a custom sharpening jig right now and I'm trying to get word on when he expects it to be out.

They're spendy, no doubt about it. But lets be honest, how many broadheads have you lost in the last 5yrs? I've only lost one, and it was on a bull Elk passthru, as far as I know, that arrow is still in orbit.

I'be shot mine a couple dozen times, unfortunately only to 40yds, though. VERY impressed with this head. They're dead nuts accurate, but I really think that comes down to tune and most new heads should fly well. They're a LOT more quiet than I thought they might be. Where they really shine is their sharpness, IMO! This is the sharpest broadhead I've ever shot and still holding a good edge after going through my target a bunch. These will be in my quiver this season, and I'm looking forward to putting one through an elk in two and a half weeks!

I've shot mine a few times all the way out to 70 yards. They are flying great for me. I fully intend on killing a bull (or cow) with one this year.

I know what you mean about the tune of the bow. I don't get it when people say "flies like a field piont", almost all broadheads will if your bow is tuned well. I always try to give something to compare to, like right now, my bow shoots muzzys, field tips and these Solids all in the same place.

i shoot montecs. i can get them very sharp. i may get some of the carbon montecs for elk. i bet i can get them sharper.. my bow is tuned for them. slicks fly great too!

They look like they would get the job done. I just like my Shuttle T 100's and have had great results with them, so I am not in the testing stage. Every elk and deer I have shot with them have dropped in sight with no tracking. Old saying "If it Ain't Broke Don't Fix It" I know we spend a lot of money on elk hunting, but $75.00 is over the top for me.

Very nice head but I can buy 6 Montec's for that price. I would consider $50.00 but at what they are priced at.

The SBH have flown great for me out to 50yds. Every weekend I extend the range 10yds.

My dad and grandpa think I'm crazy as a loon to shoot $25 a piece broadheads from that far. I say, "who cares", they were free, and since I'm a dealer for just about all broadheads, I can pick up something to replace them fairly cheap.

For those who are interested, yes it was a kill shot from 108. I shot a 5 inch group with them from 80, but only one shot from 108 yards.

You're a ballsy man shooting groups of broadheads at any distance! I'm not worried about missing the target as much as I am about running one right up the back of my previous arrow. I'll shoot groups of fieldpoints, I guess I don't mind refletching... but that's a lot of potential for losing some $$$ on arrows and broadheads!

Thankfully, you have a lifetime warranty on the broadheads... still not sure its worth the trouble!

Hopefully this weekend I can shoot them out to 80 or so. My local 100yd range doesn't allow broadheads ...

I typically won't shoot groups with broadheads at less than 70, I haven't done any damage yet, but it could happen at any time. I also only shoot 3 broadheads at a time. I guess when I start damaging them consistently, I will stop.

I have always read that the accuracy goal was 1" for every 10 yards. 1" groups at 10 yards, 2" groups at 20 yards, so on and so forth. With field points, I can usually keep it close to .5" per 10 yards.

With broadheads, I am stuck around the 1" per 10 yards, not exactly anything to worry about at 70+ yards.

Just shot the new Solids (100-Grain on 400 FMJ’s-Hoyt Element), here are my impressions.

Fly extremely well, very quiet (if a broad head makes noise), very sharp, better penetration than my Slick Tricks (seat of the pants, both fired into the same unused portion of the foam target at different yardages). They fit very nicely into the shaft, better than the tricks, tighter and no worries about becoming loose.

Nice groups at 20, 30, 40 & 50 (2 to 3 inch groups at 50 yards), slightly better than the Tricks. After 12 shots per head, still very sharp, but not as sharp as the remaining un-shot new Solid heads. Solids require no touch-up from the package and much better at holding an edge than the Tricks after repeated shooting.

Cost difference between the Tricks and the Solids is about $15.00 each or 3 Starbucks Mochas. In my opinion, my peace of mind and elk is worth 3 Mochas…

My 2 cents
I have always shot shuttle T's and have no complaints about them at all and probably would have never considered shooting something else but thought I would give the solids a try since I know steve. With my shuttle T's I actually keep better groups then I do with my field points (good problem to have) and I'm not sure if this is because of my arrows or the way my bow is tuned. Anyway, when I shot the solids last night I got the same result as the shuttle t's, maybe even a little better grouping but it was a small sample size. I probably shot 30 times. i did notice better penetration with the solid broadhead and of course they are much sharper.
So I would say the solids fly better, penetrate better, sharper, and i'm sure more durable. The only thing that the shuttle t won on was noise. It seemed to me that the solid was a little noisier in flight but still nothing to be concerned with. I look forward to using them this fall!

I picked up a set of them and they fly beautifully, I was so impressed that I bought a second set. Not getting a chance to hunt Elk this fall but come Sept 2 I will be chasing moose, hopefully I get to post a pick by the end of the two week hunt.

These broadheads are awesome..... tough, fly true and do their job extremely well. They will be putting some leaks in animals for me this year.

Only problem I see with these ....... they do not come in 200 -210 grains. I shoot GK Silver Flames and will say these solids look good, just not enough weight.

Look like Phatheads to me... Dont be fooled into thinking s30v or any other steel of the month is better then any other. Its all about heat treat,thickness and geometry when it comes to blades

Did some searching to bring up this old thread. I received an awesome gift of 3 - 125 grain Solid broad heads for Christmas. Trying to decide if I am going to give them a try.
I have debated about exchanging them because my set up right now is for 100 grain viper tricks (exchange for the 100 grain). Currently shooting 5575/400 XT arrows, . What are your opinions? I really need to get out on the range and test them both out. but with this price tag I need to stick with one. Bottom line, does anyone see an advantage for me to go ahead and use the 125 vs 100?

These really don't look much different than a magnus stingers, a two blade with bleeders a little farther forward. I shoot stingers and they too have a lifetime warranty and they are only $25.

These heads are awesome. They fly great, are sharp out of the package (I made them much sharper with some work), and strong. Did not get the chance to put one in an animal this year, but am hoping to change that in 2014.

As for your question to any advantage of 125gr vs. 100gr heads, I'm not sure you'll see much. You will have better FOC with the heavier head, which will have some effect at long range in wind conditions, but it will also serve to weaken your dynamic spine. With the 5575 arrows, your FOC should be fine, so I'd personally opt to trade them in for the 100gr heads since your bow is already tuned for that setup (I'm assuming).

As far as my thoughts on the head, they've impressed me quite a lot. They're super sharp heads and with S30V steel, edge retention is outstanding. Flight characteristics are impressive out to 70yds, I start to see drop in them compared to my fieldpoints beyond that distance, though. They are surprisingly quiet in flight... have to say I expected more noise out of them. I don't have a lot of experience to compare, but the penetration and blood trail that I had with them this year was nothing short of outstanding. My deer piled up within a couple of seconds and left a blood trail that a blind man could have followed. Very impressive head, IMO.

The only disadvantage I see to them is the 2-blade design vs. 3- or 4-blades... simply for more cutting surface. I figure I give up more cutting surface for a heavier-duty blade design in hopes that a scapula hit has a better chance for penetration and blade survival. The argument could be made for or against the 2-blade design, so only you can answer that question. I haven't (thankfully) had a bone contact experience with the Solids, but I can say the cutting surface is undoubtedly sufficient on a well-placed shot.

I want to check out what my KE is after testing my FPS at the archery shop today. Even with 11% I have been reading that most are above that. My bow is tuned for the 100's and they have worked for me with elk and deer so far with no issues. Just things I am pondering in the off season and wondering if there is room for improvement in this area. Thanks again.

You're shooting a 30" 400 spines arrow? Am I reading that right?

What's your DL and DW?

No, thank you for questioning that. I am not sure what I was thinking. I had looked it up yesterday (without my bow here) and thought those were my arrows. 7595 - Black .340 spine - 30" over all with nock and broad-head. 28" DL 70# DW. Shooting Bear Truth bow.

ok so here it is:
280 FPS "average" as the chronograph wasnt working that great. But either way it leaves me with 253.65 grain arrow with 100 grain head. Using gold tips site for a calculation on Kinetic energy, 61.64 ft lbs. FOC 8.75%
Changing heads to a 125 grain head only changes to 63.66 ft lbs. FOC 10.83%
