Post Up Your Elk Sounds 2013, The Final Conflict

Been a while since we had one of these threads going. Does anybody wish to post up some of their elk sounds for perhaps recommendations for adjustment/improvement? Earlier in the year, we did bugles with chuckles, bugles with grunts, cow/calf sounds, and some special elk sounds.

We'll make this "getting dang close to elk season 2013" version a free for all. Post of any of your elk noises you wish to offer up for comment. Only thing asked is that you spell out which sounds you've recorded and are posting up, i.e., "here's my offering for a locator bugle and some cow/calf herd sounds", or, "here's my offering of a nervous grunt, bugle w/chuckles, and excited cow sounds". You get the drift. Bring em on guys and gals ..

Here are the sounds from my young son. He would not pick up a call until about 4 weeks ago, you could say I'm very excited for him and me. He can call for me any time!!

Wyatt's scream with grunts. Again 4 weeks WOW. He is using Glacier Country Hunting calls and picked right up on it. I can't wait for the next couple of years, he just could be the designated caller.

1. You're getting a pretty wide range of cow/calf sounds in your herd talk. When you space them out a bit farther and throw them around a bit (behind you, to the front, muffled, etc.), you'll do well with these noises in the elk woods! Very nice.
2. Scream w/grunts. You're hitting these nicely. Great scream! A few too many grunts (try to limit to 3-5) but I know you're just throwing them out for practice/to record. I wouldn't change a thing.
3. Bugle w/chuckles. EDIT: I re-listened to your Bugle with Chuckles again this morning. Bugle sounds fine on this recording. Remember to limit your chuckles to a handfull, 5 to 7 or so (although I've heard bulls string out many more on occasion). Also, keep them tight together (minimal break between each sound or they kind of start sounding like grunts). Your chuckles aren't bad at all, just need minor tweaking IMHO.

All in all, very nice elk noises IMO. RJ

He just turned 16. He has hunted alot with me over the years mainly for deer, but now he has the elk bug and is very excited for this years hunt.

I'm just glad the wife has someone else to drive her crazy with practicing in the house. When we team up she just gives up and runs arons or whatever.

Wyatt great job buddy!!! Keep doing what you are doing. Sounds very good. One little tip... try making some Cow and calf sounds with your lips just a tad more open. Move your lips so that sound comes out from one side then the other.This just makes you a little more versatile caller. Now just listen to you tube videos of the real thing. We are proud of your progress! You made Schafer smile he must have been impressed.

Ctdad: I liked the 1st 2 cow / calf sounds on your sound clip the best... Just remember less pressure is more. sometimes.... On the grunts and chuckles a little more mid-tone. less on the high pitch. Uh Uh Uh Uh and on the chuckles the cadence is just faster. IMO
I realize that is being critical but, I feel you want to get better and from what I am hearing I believe you can do it.

Man. I have been super busy lately so I have been kind of neglecting the forums. This thread has me pushing the envelope on some of my calling. You guys are doing great. Keep up the good work! It's only a couple more weeks till crunch time.

ctdad, I agree with Troy, in addition to his suggestions you need a bit more voice inflection like uuugh uuugh uuugh, this will help reduce the high pitch on your chuckles & grunts. Keep up the good work!

Last sound clip post of the year so I may as well throw up a sound or 3. I'm not in particularly good calling shape at the moment, work and life have prevented me from spending too much time on it. I'm sure as hell not competition ready, thats for sure, but the sounds will suffice for the season. I apologize for the sound quality - a cell phone vid in a basement doesn't do much for acoustics haha. I also apologize for my dog running around on the upstairs floor at some point during the clips. I didn't do anything in particular here, just playing around and having some fun.

I don't count chuckles or grunts or try to keep each to a certain number, I just go with what feels right at the time. I've heard elk range in pace from a single note to 15+ notes so its really not something I feel one should concern himself with too much. I don't know about everyone else, but the excitement of the upcoming season is starting to get to me now; I've had a knot in my stomach for a week now!

Started bugling with a homemade metal tube in1975, then used my voice around 1980, when diaphragms came out I used those. For the last few years I've been using the Berry Thunder Bugle and Carlton fighting cow call. This year I've decided to go back to the diaphragm and try to get proficient with it. I have another month of practice ahead so have at it and give me some pointers.

I have another month of practice ahead so have at it and give me some pointers.

Biggest thing I would change up is the way you are manipulating your mouth on the cow calls. It sounds like you primarily stick to the classic "eeee-ewww" sound when you are cow calling. You could try changing that up a bit with different mouth movements. Instead of "eee-eww" throw in some "eee-yah" or just "yaaaaah". To get that sound just drop your bottom jaw at the end of the call and keep your mouth etc in the same shape you would as if you were spurring on a horse by saying "ya! ya!"

Once you're comfy with the new mouth movements, mix em all together and vary the pitch and volume and voila, you sound like a whole whack of elk

I plan on posting up a few if I can get to it by this weekend. Haven't had time yet this week. Maybe bring up the old sounds that didn't get analyzed?
I bought a new call (raging bull) and found that I wore the last one out. Pulling the new one out I notice I dont make the same sounds with the same pressure.......call us much stiffer than I remember. Trying to break it in, if thats the right way to put it.
