Lithium Batteries

I just am kinda wondering if the ultimate lithium batteries (that are so high priced) are a better buy than regular alkaline batteries. I use about 2 AAs a day if I leave my GPS on all day while in the back country. Thinking about using lithium in my GPS, headlite... and tent l.e.d lites we use. Also small walkie talkies. Are they worth the extra cash.......or just keep buying alkaline. Really do not want to get into rechargeable ones. Any input????

I have not used them myself but a guy at work really likes them in his gps in the winter ice fishing. Says they last twice as long in the cold. Don't know about warm weather.

was told off of other sites that they are worth it. Also said that they are lighter. Have some coming energizer 9x AA and 8x AAA will be using them in my flashlights and gps.

I know this is off topic, but why do you leave your GPS on all day? I put a new set of batteries in my GPS at the start of the elk season and never have to change them throughout the entire season. However, I never leave my GPS on all day. The only time I turn it on is to get bearing and distance to a place or to pinpoint or mark my location.

I think Alkaline batteries are worlds apart from the old standard ones. But even though Lithium may be slightly better, I never saw or felt that they were that much of an improvement. But that is just me!

Yes, disposable lithium batteries are much better, they last much longer than normal batteries. Like WW I use one set for the whole year on all my hunts. I never leave the unit on for no reason only for navigation updates if needed.

Like elknut said,I use them all the time.they last a long time and you don't have to carry the extra weight of battery.I still do carry a few extras but you don't have to as long as the ones your using are fresh. I am a rookie and an easterner so my gps (garmin 62stc) is on most of the time. I save all my tracks and take notes on mine. Then download them into Garmin base camp on the puter to see where i was and where outfitter camps are and what i want to change up. One set last me all day. I have an xtra set on me and a third set on the charger back at camp so they charge whenever my wife has the generator running.

All of my battery powered items now have lithium batteries. They power my GPS, SPOT, headlamp, tent light, hearing aides.

lithium batteries: Positives: Lighter, work better in cold weather than alkaline and last longer. Negative: expensive.

Like your cell phone, your GPS will drain batteries faster if it has trouble finding satellites. I rarely turn on my GPS or SPOT because they would be drained quickly in dark timber. If I need to mark an exact location, I use my GPS, but this is rare. I mostly mark things on my mytopo.com paper map and take notes there. I put my cell phone in airplane mode so the battery is good an entire day.

I have the Garmin 62Csx. Since it has an external antenna it picks up satellites in dark timber where my old internal antenna GPS did not.

Yup they are worth the money. I use them in gps and my camera and carry extras with me just in case. Like others i don't leave my gps on all the time i turn it on when i need to mark a wallow or water source etc. always have extra extra batteries, i gps is worthless if it doesn't work.

I leave my gps on all day, I like keeping my tracks, great scouting tool for future hunts. Lithiums last longer and are lighter. I get a solid 1.75 days on a set. I use the my Rino a lot. Here is one thing I noticed, that they will give you a false read on your battery life meter on the GPS. It will say you have half of your life left and will stay like that for about 4 hours and then the set will die really fast. Had this happened last year after I dumped my pack to go up hill after a bull, marked it on the gps, and heard it die during the hunt. My backups were in the pack, took me about 1/2 hours to find the pack. If you ever use a Dewalt Power tool with lithiums, they do the same thing. Old style batteries will start to loose power, slow down etc...the lithiums will work fine and at full power and then die completely all at once.
