Unit 61 2nd go round

So after a very fun hunt with cnelk last season in unit 61, I am off to do some more scouting this weekend with my cousin who drew a archery tag for 61 these year. I am so looking forward to get another chance to get into this unit and call some elk in. Story and pics to come.

Well we are back from scouting, went pretty good. Lots of sign got into some elk even though we really were not trying to. found some new spots to try as backups if the main spots don't pan out. Here are a couple pictures from the trip.

Thursday night departing after work and driving 9 hours to the trail head. I am hoping to post a thread up with some promising findings. Cant wait and this just makes me more restless.

Well things are packed and ready to go leaving this friday for an 8 days. Got a report from someone else that was hunting close to were we will be. He said they were seeing tons of elk several bulls over 300 but nothing was talking or coming to calls. We need a serious cool down they were hunting in 90 plus heat. Looking at forcast it should be a little cooler when we get there. Hoping they will be talking when we get there should be a fun hunt non the less.

We are back from the elk woods and what a blast we had. Being that it was my cousins first bowhunt I was hoping that we would get into some good elk and we did. Still trying to put it all in words so I will have the full story soon.

The story
Of course I got of work later then I wanted which put us into camp around 11pm. So it was a rush to get camp set up and get all of are gear ready for the morning hunt. Well wouldn’t you know it I set the alarm clock wrong and I hear is my cousin come flying down the steps of the camper “ it’s light out we over slept get up!! The good is I know there is elk are close to camp and that we were still ok on time. We decided to hunt in a valley right out of camp, as we were walking to where I wanted to try are first calling setup we started to hear some bugles which as everybody knows plans changed in a hurry when you start hearing bugles. We started chasing a couple bugles to no avail, they were not bugling consistent and not really answering back to any of the calls but they were sounding off just enough to get close to start trying to call one to us. Told my cousin let’s get to the edge of this small ravine and call I think we are close to the elk. I set him up and I drop back 45yrds and start to call. We start to hear cows and a light bugle then I see my cousin start pointing in front of him, hear they come 2 cows and a nice shooter 6 point. I stop the bull broadside to my cousin at 18yrds and he let one fly slam dunk right.......... wrong. After finding the arrow and seeing not a hint of blood or hair it was a clean miss. The only thing that I can think is he did the classic pull your bow down to watch the arrow and he shot under the bull. It was starting to get hot at that time so we decided to head back to camp and regroup. For the evening hunt we wanted to go to the tree stand water hole and check my game camera that had been out since are scouting trip in July and see what it would tell us. There were 180 pics on it showing that elk have using the water hole every hour of the day, so we decided to sit and wait and see what shows up. We had some cows come in to drink and listen to some bulls bugling on private but nothing with horns showed up. Sunday morning we decided to make a loop around the watering hole (same loop cnelk, herb and me made when cnelk got his bull last year) we were chasing some bugles but the bugles were leading us close to some private. When we felt like we were in one of the bulls backyard we set up and started calling. Started with some cow calls and did not get much reaction so to the bugle I went and man did this bull get pissed off. He came over the little knoll just a screaming, what a tank of a 6x6 this bull was 350-360 class worked him into 70 yrds but that is all he would commit and that point he turned and slowly walked back to private property, man what a rush. That night we decided to try a new spot that we knew held elk but have never hunted this area. We arrived at the new spot around 4pm and walked into a small opening of aspens and decided to try setting up and do some calling. We called for about 30 min with nothing talking or showing. I told my cousin lets go further down the valley and set up again. We walked about 80yrds further and to my surprise I spot an elk racking a tree 50yrds in front of us he had no clue we were there so I told my cousin to set up in some oak brush and I dropped back 50 yrds. I and hit the cow call twice the bull turned let out a bugle and walked broadside 30yrds and a arrow was on its way this time finding its mark. We went to look for blood where he was shot and I went around the next set of brush and there he laid 50yrds away antlers on the ground. We were only .32 of a mile from the 4 wheelers on flat ground can’t beat that.
