Great video Jason! As luck would have it I just received my most recent order today. I have a couple of new calls to try that are "hot off the press". Nice job there Jason! I appreciated how you went through the wide range of sounds with each reed! I will say there is very little difference from reed to reed. If a hunter were to use your calls they would need to make sure they used the one that fit them best because all had very similar but nice tone. Thanks!

Paul,

You aren't the first guy to bring up the similar sounds/tones across the different diaphragms

These diaphragms are quite a bit different in stretch and thickness, and react different to tongue pressure and volume changes (Lets just say there is a 250% difference in stretch and 233% difference in thickness from one end of the spectrum to the other). I think I have a habit of forcing whatever call I have in my mouth to make the sound/tone I want.

I'm sold ! Im glad you went over the diffrences pressures of each breaking over. The locator one seem to be harder come down an octave but perfect locating. Great video!

Jason, I hear ya bud! You are spot on! (grin) When using a reed a guy is looking for a certain tone that he knows is elk like no matter the reed used. That is why Craig also sounded the same in his reed comparisons with every reed, there was no real world difference in his calling or your calling that you couldn't use masterfully under the right situation! A good caller can use any quality reed if given a few minutes to adjust to it. Again, nice job!

But I often wonder why we see only bugles are made thru a tube and not cow calls.
And I also wonder why bugles are not made by just using the mouth and not a tube.

I have had success by not using a tube while bugling...
And I have had success using a cow call thru a tube...

Go figure!

Some people I know including myself have and do use a tube to produce some cow sounds. It can be very effective in the right situation. The reason I believe we do not see more people use them in reviews and etc is because we do not use the tube as frequently for cow sounds vs bull sounds. Exceptions are using it for cow barks, cow bugles, and plain old I want to try and be as loud as possible to gain attention. Again I only use my tube for cow sounds about 5% of the time. Most of my calling involves bull sounds.

I use a small amp horn for cow calling fairly often just because the winds in the area I've been hunting the past few seasons are so strong on a daily basis that they otherwise wouldn't travel more than a few yards. I don't like to use my tube too much because I personally find it adds to much bass to the cow sound. I use a small, turned cow horn and it really pops the sound out there on a windy day without adding that deep bass sound. I've had a lot of success bugling without a tube, especially when working in close. I've found that getting right inside the cows and making a soft, mouth only chuckle has been a pretty dynamite way of making herd bulls turn inside out.

When not using a tube for bull sounds I feel like I lose a lot of the realism in the sound. In a pinch I will use my hands to help out, but in my opinion the bugle tones need some help in the form of resonance in the tube. I also like the fact that most tubes provide backpressure making it easier to run the diaphragm and get it to do what you want. The tube also adds volume by directing the sound in a localized direction. Like you have stated you have been successful without it so it is evident its not needed, I think it is just preferred.

I cow call through my tube in few cases. If I'm trying to locate using a loud cow call or trying to throw the call behind me when solo calling a bull.

I completely agree with everything said here, the tubeless bull sounds are moreso just another one of those "another tool in the toolbox" type of deals with me. I find it works well when the elk are pressured hard and are responding well to the really soft calls when the other hunters are being more boisterous. I whole heartedly agree with what you said about losing the realism of the sound, it certainly takes a lot of voice inflection to keep it sounding better when going tubeless.

Very true. But, does the patent prevent one from making domes and selling them as seperate add ons for calls. Sort of a retro fit device! Just might be something to look into. Actually, I doubt that any call makers make their own. They are most likely made and purchased from some larger plastic company that has the mold.
