Colorado elk 1st rifle unit 64/65

New to site : I contacted parks and wildlife about 1 year ago and have talked to the hunt planning team about every month since, they told me to look at unit 65. I have a group of 6 that drew either sex 1st rifle. We have been looking at topo maps, county maps, state maps ect: looks like a hard area to hunt, was wondering if anyone knew of a honey hole they would share,or maybe a mountain, river, stream, waterhole ect that they would share any help would be great thanks

Ok easeup I tried to pm you but site says I'm too new to do that . Trying to find any area to hunt where there is a creek to camp by if possible and mainly where the elk are I have always hunted unit 4 by Craig

I have been watching the news here in Texas haven't seen anything on the fire. Where is it at near silver jack

Unit 65 has amazing scenery and plenty of elk. The terrain is steep. If you're willing to work for it, you'll find elk. Hunt the north and east faces and keep the wind in your face. Good luck

I was down there in July and the east fork was blocked off south of silverjack, the sign said smoke in area, so maybe it had something to do with the fire you speak of. I am very familiar with 65, never been to 64 though. There are plenty of places to camp and good access. I also have a 1st season e/s tag there this year also. PM me and maybe I can give you some ideas.

I'm pretty familiar with 65. Most places early in the year are pretty high and easier to access spots have a lot of hunters. The Colorado hunting atlas is pretty correct on movements. Are you backpacking or car camping ?

It's HARD country. You can expect climbs of 2000-6000 feet in some places to get to elk from the trailhead. In early season you can expect elk to be from 10-13K, and if you get an early snow access can be difficult. The easy spots get a lot of guys and the hard spots get very few.

We will be staying by the silver jack resiorvor has it snowed there yet. From what I can tell it looks like a little snow on the mountains

In 65: On west side of Owl Creek Pass, north and south of the road up against Cimarron Ridge. High Mesa east of Silver Jack. Those places get Orange Crush-level pressure, but elk are killed there every season. Cow Creek into the wilderness area is great, outfitters used it heavily several years ago when I was in there. The upper reaches of all the forks of the Cimarron River, splendid. Elk can and do stay very high in this unit, 13K+, until 2nd or 3rd season. There is no finer country in CO than the Big Blue. Silver Jack is notorious for bears in the campgrounds, so put your food away, and avoid menstruation entirely.

Hunting was bad, it snowed the hole time we were there, didn't see any elk, just a bad week all together ! We are trying to decide where to go this year !
