SINGLE PIN SIGHT FOR ELK

How many of you guys use one pin sights and why ? I've always used multi pin sights but may give a single a try this year. Any ideas or concerns and of coarse any field experience while hunting info is what i'm really after.

I tried a single pin for WT hunting ONE year. Hunting in areas with spotted cover was a pain in the butt. I'd have a deer coming in that I wanted to shoot, it would turn and I'd think, okay, 30 yards. I'd adjust my pin for 30, then the deer would turn again and keep coming in to 10 yards. I'd be fiddle-farting around with my pin with my release hand, deer would stop and offer a perfect shot. I'd get my release on, deer would walk out to 20 yards. Release off, adjust pin, deer would go back out to 30. Eventually I'd get busted by that deer or by a doe off to one side that I didn't see . . . she'd be watching the whole fiasco.

Went back to a 3 pin setup for the next season, killed a few deer.

I like the idea of them, but what a lot of undue fiddle-farting and moving around!

I'm going with a single pin this year, it will be set at 30yds. This means I make a slight height adjustment at 20 or 40 yards. After that if needed I would dial my pin up with the Montana Ascent sight that I use, it's good out to 100 yards & is pre-marked by me for easy & fast use.

One pin is much less confusing & easier to find in any light conditions.

I would like to switch to a one pin system for ease of use but my older bow just doesn't shoot flat enough. I have shot with guys that have the latest and greatest flat shooting bows. For example, 1 pin out to 40yrds. That is just awesome to be able to have that. I just could not trust my bow with how much drop it has out to 40/45 yards with one pin. I need at least three including 20/30, 40 and then 45.

I went to a slide sight this year, tired of the cluttered sight window, and with a tight pin gap, its hard to see the "spot" when youre shooting. I set my sight from 15 yards to 55 yards so far, and will leave it set at 25 when hunting. Its nice to see just the crosshair and the entire target. Also started using a clarifiar in my peep, which helps clear the sight picture up...

I've thought about doing the same as the top 3 pins in my site picture are almost touching BUT I'm afraid to go through what Tyler went through. With my Spott Hogg Seven Deadly Pins I can draw back and have everything I need right there from 0-90 yards.

All you gotta do is know where your pin hits at otherv ranges. With my sight set at 25 yards, at 35 yards, Im only 2 1/2" low, and at 15 yards, Im just a touch high. At 40 yards, if I dont have time to slide the sight, I learned to hold the pin high on a deers back, and on my elk 3D target, I hold the pin 2/3 of the way up and at 40 yards I still hit the vitals. Im using an old Sight Master that Wayne Carlton gave me years ago when we both shot for Jennings. Had a fibre optic pin made for it that centers the crossfires and it works perfectly.

so when you say one pin, are you talking about a pendulum sight, a one pin sight like the old sightmaster with the trigger to adjust it on the fly or are you talking about just setting up one pin and ball parking the shot if it is closer or further away?

I've tried alot of sights over the years but alway come back to a solid 5 pin set-up that has a nice pin adjustment system for fine tuning my pins. I hated the days when a sight was a threaded brass rod with two nuts that slide up and down a piece of metal with two slots cut into it.

Sight Master, without the finger countrol. I keep the knob loose, so I can easliy push it up with my thumb.

I have a single pin hha sight 0 to 80 yards 1 pin my release is the rope style I can hook my release to my loop and still reach my adjustment wheel for my sight also set up the trick pin on my sight I can set my sight at 55 yards and aim at the bottom of the elks chest and be in the vitals from 20 to 45 yards without moving my sight if its closer than 20 just aim up a bit from the bottom of the chest and if I have time to adjust and hold dead on even better although I have been looking at the 3 pin hogg father for longer yardage should be able to get out over a 100 yards with that one just can't seem to part with $380 a lot of money for a sight maybe next year

I use an adjustable single pin. With todays bows the difference at 15-35 yards is small. Set the pin at 30, and shoot a little low when something is at 20, at 40, shoot a little high, at 50 and 60 I make the adjustment as you usually have time at that range. I practice that way after I have it zeroed in.

I hunt thick cover for whitetails, I usually will get in my stand and range all my possible shots. Most will be less than 30. I pick an average and set the pin there. Mental adjustments after that.

I don't like the clutter, and think I do better at longer ranges with the single pin.

Travis, I have been shooting a single adjustable pin for 20+ years. I set it at 25 yards. You should also know going the single pin route has some challenges with bow quivers. I use a Montana black gold Ascent and a tight Spot Quiver for this reason. The MBG lets you mount your quiver tight to the bow. Lots of single pin "SLIDER sights" DO NOT. Hope this helps. ---> Troy

I have been a Catquiver guy for a bunch of years now as they are awesome and very universal. I am thinking of trying the Montana acsent. It's very nice to see your calls on the market !! I was at the world elk calling contest in Vegas and I Didn't know you at that time but I remember giving your kids knuckles after they came off the stage as they walked by me on there way to there happy parents !!! That was my first contest and It was pretty nerve racking to say the least !! But I hope to see you guys next year and introduce myself !! Keep those kids going and they will have great success !!

I regularly shoot out to 110 yards, and I just can't see doing that with a fixed pin sight. I have pretty bad eyesight and pins start bluring together on me. I've been using a 3 pin slider for a few years, but am going to 1 pin this year. I'm shooting a Tommy Hogg with a large multi-pin housing, but just 1 pin centered in the housing.

In the past my top pin has always been a 30 yard pin, and basically dead on 0-35yds. It depends on your bow speed and arrow weight, but most of us can set a pin at 30 and not need to move it until something is past 40 ish. And, if it's past 40 and not staying put long enough for me to range it, adjust a pin and shoot, I'm not likely to shoot at it anyway.

Just 1 arrow? Where's the group? Here's mine from the other day at 115yards with the Tommy Hogg--of course I did lose 2 arrows that day by completely missing the target--but this is an honest 3 arrow 4" group at 115!

Tommy or Ascent--they are both great sights

I shoot one arrow at a time per target. Broke too many arrows shooting groups in the past.

Plus, the walk back and forth to the target gets your heart rate up which is a good simulation of what it's like when hunting.

I at practiced to 100 yards before and will do it again next time I'm at the range.

i think for me a single pin sight's strength are the "inbetween" distances. like 54 yards for example. even with a wire running down the center of my 7DP sight, i am never fully confident in windage accuracy when i put the bulls in between two fuzzy glowing orbs. my eyes cant see that dumb wire clearly.

i would love to find some spare change to try that Trijucon pendulum sight!!

With my eyesight getting a little worse the older I get, have been thinking about a one pin sight. Specifically the Montana Black Gold customize it. Do like my Axcel sight. We will see how I do next week shooting the Bogus Challenge.
