Tactics for hunting unfamiliar area out of a drop camp

I hunted Wyoming a few years ago, walking all over and never seeing any elk. I was unable to climb in to the wilderness areas. I will be hunting unit 54 in 2014 1st rifle. After being dropped off, what would be the method for looking for elk. I will be hunting with a buddy.

Should I walk the tops and he walk to bottoms?

Should we split up?

We will have a wall tent provided. Should we come back every night to sleep in the wall tent or would spending the night in just a sleeping back and getting further a way from the main camp help in finding the elk?

Is a call worth purchasing for 1st rifle season in Colorado?

If hunting Colorado rifle, find yourself a good spot where you can cover a large area and park your tail right there. Around 9:00 o'clock everyone else will start moving around and if you are in a good spot they may move the elk your way.

Also, statistics say the very first day of the very first rifle season is when most of the elk are harvested in Colorado.

I never hunted elk with a rifle, but having had many conversations with several outfitters and rifle hunters over the years, it seems that this is how the majority of Colorado rifle elk are taken, at least in the areas that we hunt.
