As soon as that near leg goes forward my arrow is on ite way, that would fill my cow tag now it would be time to start looking for that bull.

Nice cow, but I would probably pass until mid season. There is no reason not to shoot her, right there, if I want her.

I can go either way on that one. I can make that shot work or I could hold several more seconds if I felt the need for more margin. She is not worried and happily feeding and I am at full draw. I see no reason to think she will bolt out soon.

the only reason to pass is to have a future chance at a bull with my either sex tag.

with a rifle i shoot her right there, with my bow im waitin til she takes one more step then its on, unless that other limb is in the way at that point then i wait til she clears that one.

If it don't have horns, I'm not shooting.Ive taken several cows over the years, but on several occasions it has came back to bite me in the azz. About the time I'm punching the tag, along comes a bull. I love them elk steaks, but tag soup really isn't that bad. Ill shoot the ladies with my camera.

I have to pass but not because it is a cow, but because i was offered i similar shot a few years ago. I was so excited, i was about to get my first crack at an elk and she was standing much like that, i had her dead in my scope but something just didn't feel right so i sat there watching her and after 5 minutes or so i finally saw her head...........it was a young spike. Always make sure your cow is a cow......lol I have been doing this for 5 years and the score is. ELK 5 / BRAD 0. Oh well i'll change that by bow hunting them this year for the first time.

Pass, but not cause I won't shoot a cow. I go to Wyo every year with a reduced price cow tag, but I'd wait for her to walk right out completely open and stop her with a light whistle.

I hunt with one either sex tag, so to make my decision I need to know how far from the road I am, plus how many days I have left to hunt. She does look tasty though!

Pass - I shoot 25 yards or less for hunting. Plus at my shorter height than the camera person, the vitals may be blocked because my shooting path is lower.

If I wanted a cow, I'd wait. I think a better shot is coming, it appears more open in front of her and she's undisturbed. I guess the frame of mind would come into play also, like have I missed an opportunity earlier in the hunt because I was waiting for the perfect shot.

It was getting late in the morning on the last Saturday of the season about four years ago. I was waiting in my tree stand in what had been an unusually long and frustrating season. That morning the rut was at its peak. I had heard some of the most active bugling and screaming I had heard in years. Still I stayed and waited. Finally I saw a herd on the hill side across from where I waited. As they were passing by, I noticed the herd bull was a stocky thick antlered 4x4. He was no great trophy as measured by standard scoring, but it was the next to the last day of the season.
I sure hoped they would cross the draw between us, and come my way. Soon I had my answer. They turned. Across the draw they came. The lead cow ran across into an opening and stopped just above where I sat. She was just 30 yards away. I decided to let her pass. I would wait for the bull. The other cows and calves passed in front of me in similar fashion. Anyone of them I could have shot as they stopped in the clear opening. Finally the bull came. For some reason he had held back a little. When he got to the opening he ran completely across. He finally stopped with his front 1/3 behind a large pine tree. He was one step from being completely gone, leaving me no more opportunity. As he stood briefly, I came to full draw. For an instant I had to think about making the shot. I set my sight on his vitals very close to the trunk of the pine and squeezed the trigger. I saw the arrow stab deep into his side where it took out both lungs. That arrow had to pass within less that two inches of the tree, as even part of the bull's lungs were covered. The bull dropped within my sight less than fifty yards away.
Cnelk's cow is really an easy shot to make as presented. The key is not to be nervous and to focus on where you want the arrow to hit. If you focus on the obstacles, you will hit obstacles. If you focus on placing the arrow right behind the front leg, then that is where you should hit. The critical element is "focus".

Swede brings up a good point for you guys who worry about obsticals. Think it and you will hit it. If you know you can smack a golf ball at 30 yards, then why worry about a tree branch 3 inchs off target? I grew up hunting the hills of west virginia and shooting through trees are everyday ordeals. Focus on the shot not the obsticals in the shot.

Seeing as how I already have a private land cow tag for this year, it would be hard to pass on this one. A well placed shot right behind the jaw bone will work on this one. There will be no bloodshot meat and no blood trail as she will crumple right on the spot.
