Stratagies for hunting during full moon

Postby spyder24 » 05 29, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Full moon will be the middle of September. How does hunting stratagies change during the full moon?

No. My hunting strategies change as the rut starts and progresses, regardless of whatever the moon decides to do at any given time. Seems like it can't make up its mind whether to be full, gone, half, sliver, whatever. I figure the moon's gonna do what it's gonna do, and we can't do much about it.

Seeing the full moon is good where I hunt, because it means high-pressure and reasonably consistent wind early and late. Not seeing the moon means I may not get to hunt the next day if a front settles in and screws with the wind.

I do not change my strategies according to the moon. I just hunt and accept what happens. I do tend to stay in the woods a little longer on a bright full moon night do to not needing a flashlight walk back to camp. Sometimes the dark moon helps, sometimes it doesn't. Sure they feed later and bed earlier on a full moon, but bulls still bugle from there beds. ;) . One thing for sure, the coyotes love it!

we don't do anything different. We just continue to hunt the elk where we find them.

X3. They may a bit more nocturnal in their feeding habits but get close, challenge their manhood, and they'll respond accordingly.

Don't be confused or overly concerned about full moon myths. A Full Moon can allow the elk to go nocturnal. Hot weather can slow down the search for cows and bugling during day light hours. The heat can lead elk towards being lethargic just as it does us! Cows cannot control when their estrus cycle will start, in other words they cannot choose it happening only after night fall during a Full Moon! Full Moon times during peak rut times is magic! Locating elk at night during this phase or an hour or so before light is at the top of our list! Locate at these times & your odds for success can sky rocket! It doesn't get any better than a Full Moon during Peak Rut Phases!

If you've got the stamina (almost noone does) it's the best and easiest time to stay with the herd all night and be there with an arrow knocked at first light. This is only for crazy people ;)

I have a love/hate relationship with the Full Moon Phase. I love that the bulls bugle at night but hate the fact that I get very little sleep! The Full Phase is a time that really helps me find the elk!

If your deticated enough, the full moon is out, and the weather is hot, sleep a split shift.
Sleep: 11AM - 4PM then 11PM - 3AM
Locate and hunt 4AM - 9AM then 6PM - 11PM.

My 2-cents.

Elk tend to move more in late afternoon and evenings during a full moon at least based on the location data I have seen, so we tend concentrate more on the evening hunt….

I always use my Moon Screen when hunting the full moon.
Those moon tans can really sting...

I like what you said about the heat. I think that effects things more than the moon ever does.
