Best state for Bulls

Postby NCelkhtr » 05 23, 2013 •  [Post 1]

Just for fun, in your opinion what is the best state to take a bull elk? Theres alot to take in considering size, numbers of elk, and ease of calling? (I know whitetails in some areas respond to calling much better than in other areas).

I'm assuming you mean any bull elk. I've only hunted Colorado and Wyoming and Wyo is a ghost town before rifle season. Btw the two, Wyo was better for unpressured elk. I guess that leads me to another assumption  , I'm an archery guy and I'm talking archery bull. As for rifle or muzzy both CO and WY have some slam dunk opps for the hard working hunter.

Best place to get a bull has to be Oregon or Idaho….right Colorado has too many hunters, Montana has very few elk per square mile, gotta cover lots of area, most or the elk in Wyoming are in Yellowstone, New Mexico is working on converting there best elk hunting to a National Park, Arizona’s great if you have a lot money, Nevada takes a bunch of points to draw and the list goes on further supporting the idea that Oregon and Idaho are the best places to hunt elk. Right? rrr

John I am sure you are right. If you are looking for a 300+ bull, you need to go to some place my tag does not apply to, or wear bullet proof britches. BTW: I have not seen them in camo yet. If you get on one of the ranches, where there are a few big boys, just pray the cops find you trespassing before the land owner does. :D

If you can get drawn, AZ is a great state for bulls. Whats exciting is you never know the caliber of bulls that can and will come screaming into your calls. NM ranks up there in a lot of units. A few units are considered "sleeper" unit and are producing great big bulls. The fires in AZ a few years ago pushed bulls into NM, and a lot of elk stayed in NM, resulting in great hunting. Plus, the late blackpowder seasons in the 16's produce some true monsters. I used to guide the late season, and we killed some big 380" plus bulls in one of the 16's...

Before the WA season went to HE double toothpicks in a hand basket (very, very crappy archery elk rut season currently) I would lobby that it was a very good state to target. I have passed up countless smaller bulls here over the years. Rooseys are a different breed and very harvestable "if" you can hunt them during any semblance of the rut. Of the three current states that I target, WA, MT, and ID I'd have to say ID is the best for the season they offer and both the quantity/quality of the bulls one can get into if they know the business.

The northwest
Area in California is a sleeper area. I think they pull A single tag from the area. I have seen pics of biiiiiiig bulls there.
